Wizards And Suns Swap Bigs
With the 2013 NBA regular season tipping off next week, the Wizards have made a major trade with Phoenix.
The Wizards sending injured center Emeka Okafor and a 2014 first round draft pick to the Suns for center Marcin Gortat along with a trio of guards, Shannon Brown, Malcolm Lee and Kendall Marshall.
Thoughts on the deal? Okafor and a first round pick for Gortat? Let us know at the DCPro Reddit page!
Prior to the deal, the Wizards had 15 players (the NBA maximum) with guaranteed contracts. Washington will now have to cut three players to get back down to the league maximum. Early speculation is that Gortat will be the only player kept in the deal, with Washington waiving the three guards.
Shannon Brown has a $3.5 million contract for this season and Malcolm Lee $855,000, also only for this year. Kendall Marshall, a Dumfries, Virginia native, was selected 13th overall in 2012 after a solid career at North Carolina. The point guard is scheduled to make just over $2,000,000 this season, with team options each of the next two seasons.
Okafor will be paid over $14.5 million this season, a hefty expiring contract for the rebuilding Suns. The 2014 first round pick heading to Phoenix is protected to No.12, in what figures to be one of the strongest, deepest drafts in years. The Suns could have as many as four first round picks.
