The Redskins Roster: Who is in & Who is out?
This is my projection of which players currently on the Washington Redskins roster will make the team on offense and special teams. Defensive players will follow soon in a subsequent article. Read on…
QUARTERBACK – 3
Who is in: Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins, Rex Grossman.
Who is out: Pat White
Analysis: White has out-performed all expectations, but Grossman has been better, Cousins was excellent in limited work and RG3 is RG3, the franchise of the franchise. It’s a shame the Skins can’t stick White on the practice squad because that’s where he belongs right now.
Who is in: Alfred Morris, Roy Helu, Chris Thompson, Keiland Williams
Who is out: Evan Royster, Jawan Jamison
Analysis: This was my toughest call and I wouldn’t be surprised to be wrong. Everything was easy until I tried to decide who makes the team, Williams or Royster. I also considered the Redskins would cut them both and go with just three running backs, with one, probably Jamison, on the practice squad. I went with Williams over Royster simply because I believe Williams is the better special teams player, though Royster is probably marginally better as a running back.
FULLBACK – 1
Who is in: Darrel Young
Who is out: Eric Kettani got cut yesterday.
Analysis: The Skins don’t use the fullback in every formation, but when they do, Young is one of the best there is. His backup is most likely to be a tight end, probably Logan Paulsen or Niles Paul.
Who is in: Fred Davis, Logan Paulsen, Niles Paul, Jordan Reed
Who is out: Emmanuel Ogbuehi
Analysis: Ogbuehi hasn’t been cut yet, but he will be. If the Skins like him enough they may stash him on the practice squad. Davis is the starter and Paul is the special teams monster. Reed may spend a few weeks inactive on game day until he figures out blocking.
CENTER – 1
Who is in: Will Montgomery
Who is out: Kevin Matthews, Tevita Stevens
Analysis: Montgomery is a very good NFL center and the team will use Lichtensteiger to back him up.
Who is in: Chris Chester, Kory Lichtensteiger, Adam Gettis, Josh LeRibeus
Who is out: Jacolby Ashworth
Analysis: Maurice Hurt, who is currently on the PUP list, should make the team if his rehab continues to make progress. Hurt is a valuable swing man who can play guard or right tackle and his return to health would fill out the OL depth. Chester and Lichtensteiger are the starters, Chester is the superior one.
TACKLE – 4
Who is in: Trent Williams, Tyler Polumbus, Tom Compton, Tony Pashos
Who is out: Jeremy Trueblood, Xavier Nixon. I liked Nixon as a free agent signing and think he might get a shot at the practice squad. Trueblood is done.
Who is in: Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan, Santana Moss, Leonard Hankerson, Aldrick Robinson
Who is out: Skye Dawson, Dezmon Briscoe, Lance Lewis, Nick Williams
Analysis: The Skins haven’t kept just five receivers since Mike Shanahan came to town, but I think they will this year because of pressures elsewhere on the roster and the general improvement at this position. This is easily the strongest top five wideouts the Redskins have had since 1999 at the very least.
PLACE KICKER – 1
Who is in: Kai Forbath
Who is out: John Potter was cut yesterday
Analysis: This was never a real kicking competition.
Who is in: Sav Rocca
Who is out: Nobody
Analysis: Punter had even less competition than kicker.
LONG SNAPPER – 1
Who is in: Nick Sundberg
Who is out: Nobody
Analysis: Like punter, there was no competition for this job.
