Terps Win In Paradise

Maryland opened play in the Virgin Islands with a 68-43 win over Marist.

The Terrapins pulled away in the second half after leading only 26-20 at intermission. Jake Layman had a game high 16 points, hitting four of six from three point range. Freshman Roddy Peters started at point guard, but was limited to 18 minutes, ending up with nine points, two assists and only one turnover.

Coach Mark Turgeon expected to struggle offensively against the pressure Marist defense. Marist had trouble getting to the Virgin Islands and ended up missing Thursday’s practice session.

The Terps get a day off on Saturday, returning on Sunday night in the winners bracket against Northern Iowa, winners over Loyola Marymount. Tipoff in that semifinal matchup is scheduled for 8pm EST and will be carried LIVE by the CBS Sports Network. Following Maryland-Northern Iowa in the other semifinal, Providence and LaSalle, who defeated Vanderbilt and Morgan State respectively.
