Are you one of those strange people holding out hope that TE Fred Davis would return to the Washington Redskins? If so, abandon it.

So, let’s review. Davis got suspended for drug abuse at the end of the 2011 season, which was shaping up to easily be the best season of his career. Then he ruptured his Achilles Tendon less than halfway into the 2012 season. Then he failed to ignite any interest in free agency and had to sign what amounted to a one-year deal to come back to Washington. Then he quickly found himself in Mike Shanahan‘s doghouse and couldn’t get out of it. Turns out Fred had been falling asleep in team meetings, though he didn’t think it was such a big deal. Then he got benched for missing pregame meetings. Davis found himself repeatedly on the inactive list on game days and even when he was active, he hardly ever played and was never a real part of the offense.

Now, it seems, another drugs suspension. This, despite the fact that Davis promised drugs would not be a problem for him again.

First off, Fred Davis was not coming back to DC in 2014. The Redskins front office is very familiar with this physically-gifted, but perennially underachieving screw-up and they would like to become a lot less familiar with him in the coming years. In other words, the Redskins had no interest in bringing Davis back even before this latest report.

The real issue now is whether or not Davis will draw the attentions of any NFL team, let alone the one who knows him best. Fred Davis’ NFL career might not be over, but it is certainly on life support.
