Redskins Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down, Falcons Edition
The Washington Redskins rallied in the final minute of the game, as Kirk Cousins connected a touchdown pass to Santana Moss to give the Redskins a one point deficit. Mike Shanahan attempted a two point conversion, but failed, as the Redskins fell to Atlanta 27-26. Sitting at 3-10, in the midst of a dismal season, you can’t blame Shanahan for going for the win. Did anyone really want to see two 3-10 teams with a combined 9 turnovers go to overtime? I think not.
So who gets the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down? Here we go . . .
LB Brain Orakpo. Think he is playing for a big contract? Orakpo was a beast today. Check out these stats: 8 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and 2 QB hits. He was a menace all day to Atlanta QB Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense. Orakpo’s 1.5 sacks put him in double digits for the season, with 10.5 sacks. Seven of those sacks have come over his last six games. Oh and he recovered a fumble. Obviously, Orakpo is a guy that has not quit not he season. Kudos to him.
WR Pierre Garcon. Another big game for the big wideout. Garcon caught 7 passes from 10 targeted throws for 129 yards and average 18.4 yards per carry. With two games left in the season, Garcon trails former Redskins great Art Monk by 10 receptions (106) for the franchise record. It was also the 14th consecutive game with 5 or more receptions. Garcon is a gamer who fights for yards after the catch every reception. It was a nice day for the most consistent player on this offense.
Honorable Mentions: Perry Riley had a terrific game with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Kudos to Chris Baker who was a force on the defensive front in the first half. It was Baker’s first career start. Shout out to Kirk Cousin who completed 29 passes for 381 yards and three TD passes. Cousin’s deep balls were pretty accurate, hitting north Garcon and Aldrick Robinson on deep patterns.
RB Alfred Morris. Despite having a nice day on the ground, by gaining 98 yards on 18 carrier, Morris coughed the ball up twice. We here at DCPSR despite turnovers and the Redskins had seven of them today. Morris was accountable for two of the seven. That earns a thumbs Down. Without these turnovers, the Redskins would have won this game.
QB Kirk Cousins: Read above. We hate turnovers. They are game killers, and that is exactly what they did today. The Redskins turned the ball over 7 times, Cousins was responsible for 3 of the, with a fumble lost and 2 interceptions. Both picks were poorly thrown footballs. However, Cousins is a rookie and will make mistakes. He had a terrific passing day, throwing for 381 yards and 3 TDs, but the turnovers were killers.
