Redskins Roundup: Admitting the obvious

WR Pierre Garcon says QB Robert Griffin III is not 100% healthy. I”m glad someone has the guts to admit the obvious.

Meanwhile, head coach Mike Shanahan defended RG3‘s inexcusable turnovers. I guess that’s part of his job, but it shouldn’t be anyone else’s jobs. That INT and that fumble were both inexcusable — hence my earlier use of the word.

Shanahan also says RG3 is getting better at sliding. That seems pretty debatable, too.

This is all you need to know about Washington’s pass defense — or lack thereof, courtesy of John Keim at ESPN. In first two games, Lions QB Matt Stafford completed 1 of 8 passes on throws of 15-plus yards. On Sunday he was 7-9 for 22.2 yards per attempt.

You may have noticed, as I did, the Redskins using ILB Nick Barnett to give London Fletcher a rest during the loss to the Lions. Fletcher is in favor of this to keep himself “fresh.” Let’s face it, this has got to be Fletcher’s last go-round.

Rookie FS Bacarri Rambo didn’t play a down against the Lions and it appears his effort is the main reason:

“When he gets his opportunities he has to take advantage of it,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “We’re not here to keep his spirits up. When he does play special teams, whatever role you’re in, you better play 100 percent and make some plays. If he doesn’t play anything on defense, he better play well on special teams. And if you don’t play well on special teams and you’re not a starter, you won’t be dressing. Everyone has a role and it changes during the season.”

Whew, that’s an ouchie. A coach can’t make his displeasure more obvious than that, short of cutting a player outright.

WR Leonard Hankerson started over WR Joshua Morgan against the Lions because Hankerson played better against Green Bay. It didn’t matter, neither one of them did much. The receivers right now are Pierre Garcon, Santana Moss and three other guys who shall remain nameless.

Apparently, CB Richard Crawford‘s knee injury, which knocked him out for the season, isn’t as serious as originally thought. He tore his LCL, not his ACL, and recovery time should be about eight months. That’s good news.

Former Redskins CB Fred Smoot called RG3 a “brat” and Mike Shanahan the “Red Lobster.” I like that. Fred Smoot cracks me up. I don’ t know that I’d call RG3 a brat, but I do think he allowed himself to believe all that great press he’s gotten over the last 13 months.

Former Redskins LB and special teams star Lorenzo Alexander is injured and out for the remainder of the season. That’s a bummer. Alexander is one of the legitimately good guys in the NFL.
