Redskins promote Nick Williams to roster

Updated: November 11, 2013

The Washington Redskins have promoted WR Nick Williams from the practice squad to the active roster. Williams will replace RB Chris Thompson. Thompson was placed on the season ending injured reserve. Thompson is apparently suffering from an injured shoulder.

The former Connecticut wide receiver signed with the Redskins in the offseason as an undrafted rookie. Williams impressed the Redskins brass in training a camp, but failed to make the final cut.

With the Redskins struggling on special teams, particularly on the return units, Williams could find himself in a returning role. The Redskins have particularly struggled on punt returns, with both Thompson and Josh Morgan being quite disappointing. He was originally signed to compete as a punt and kick return specialist. Williams averaged 20.4 yards per return on kicks and 12.0 on punts in his senior season at UConn.
