Cousins & RG3Today begins a new series of articles at DC Pro Sports Report, focusing on what the Washington Redskins have right now at each position and what they need or do not need at that position in free agency. We get the football rolling with the quarterbacks.

STARTER: Robert Griffin III

BACKUP: Kirk Cousins

FREE AGENT: Rex Grossman

RECOMMENDATION: Find a cheap and young third stringer in free agency or the NFL Draft.

This position is fairly straight-forward. New head coach Jay Gruden is committed to RG3 as the starter, unlike the departed Mike Shanahan, which means Kirk Cousins is a backup. There’s been some talk of trading Cousins, but that is all it appears to be right now — talk. Unless a team ponies up a second round pick for Cousins the Redskins would be wise to hang on to him for at least one more season — and I think they will.

That brings up the subject of Rex Grossman. He’s been content to play third fiddle to the two younger men ahead of him on the depth chart because as long as the Shanahans were in town he was guaranteed a well-paying job with very little risk of physical injury. With his patrons gone and Grossman facing free agency and the chance to perhaps secure a second-string job elsewhere, it’s hard to see Rex back in DC in 2014.

So what should the Redskins do about the third string QB position? Well, maybe nothing. Not all teams carry three quarterbacks and the Redskins could decide to stick with just Griffin and Cousins. More likely, the team will bring in a young and cheap quarterback, possibly one taken in the final rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft. Or the team could grab one of the many free agent quarterbacks available in 2014, like Shaun Hill, Colt McCoy or Josh McCown. Personally, I’d like to see the Redskins obtain Pat White again and give him another shot.
