Notes on the Redskins Cuts

Few thoughts on the Redskins roster reductions.

First, many were surprised at the release of CB Chase Minnifield. Understandably so. Minnifield has a ton of raw talent. However, it is just that, raw talent. Minnifield had a few hiccups in the final two preseason games, allowing receivers to get behind him. That can lead to big plays, which Jim Haslett wants to avoid. Then Redskins instead chose to keep CB Jerome Murphy, who was more consistent and who earned praise from the defensive staff through camp. Minnifield will likely end up on the practice squad. Given his knees, he will likely pass through waivers and end up there where he can continue to develop.

Despite a solid effort of 52 yards and a TD in the Buffalo game, the Redskins release RB Keiland Williams. Mike Shanahan instead chose to go with a draft pick, he selected, Evan Royster, for the final running back slot, over Keiland Williams. Royster had a nice final performance against Tampa Bay. Royster ran for 59 yards on 11 carries with a TD. He also had a nice cut run called back on penalty. He needed a good performance and he delivered.

Not surprising, DeJon Gomes was released in favor of Jose Gumbs. Gumbs earned praise from Redskins coaches and deserved a spot. As for Gomes, bad reads and poor penalties caught up,to him as Haslett decided a more disciplined approach.

Surprise for me, and perhaps it is more so to do with lack of depth, was the fact that it appears G Josh LeRibeus made the roster. To me, he has been far from impressive and word was that Redskins coaches were not impressed with his physical shape. This may have more to do with Maurice Hurt starting the season on the PUP than LeRibeus earnings roster spot.

The remaining question is what will the Redskins do with QB Pat White. I don’t see much of a chance of White making the roster over veteran Rex Grossman. He is too well liked by Kyle Shanahan. The Redskins are seeking a trade partner for White, but if they fail, they could very well carrying him a few weeks to see what opportunities to trade come along.

Other than that, cut day shook out much like we expected.
