No suspension for Brandon Meriweather
The NFL was weighing disciplinary action against Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather today. The decision has been made and the Washington Post reports the NFL will not suspend Meriweather.
Meriweather knocked himself out of the game last Sunday against Green Bay on a helmet to helmet hit on Green Bay running back Eddie Lacy. It was his season debut after missing the first game with a sore groin. He missed all of last year, except for part of a game, with a knee injury.
Long term, the Redskins have to make a decision on what to do with Meriweather. His reckless play caused two separate incidences on Sunday that could have easily resulted in penalties. Playing recklessly won’t only cost him disciplinary action, but himself at harm as well, as we witnessed Sunday when he left the game after being knocked out cold.
The Redskins need Meriweather. The secondary has been nothing short of dismal, getting torched for for 203 yards and 2 TDs from Michael Vick in week one, and 480 yards and 4 TDs by Aaron Rodgers last week. Meriweather can’t help the Redskins if he constantly is inactive due to injury.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan did not update the status of Meriweather today. That update is expected Wednesday.
Asked if he believed that Meriweather’s hits on Sunday were legal, Shanahan said, “To be honest with you, the first one, it looked like the running back as kind of going downhill, and when Brandon, when he went for the tackle, it looked to me that it was perfect. Then all of a sudden, when he ducked his head, I couldn’t really tell in slow motion because I didn’t see the TV copy, I just saw the video – exactly where the contact was. The second one, on the sideline, yeah, that’s what you are supposed to do. That’s a legal hit.””
