Nats trade Abad to A’s

Updated: November 25, 2013

The Washington Nationals have traded veteran reliever Fernando Abad to the Oakland A’s in exchange for minor league OF John Wooten.

Last week Abad was designated for assignment along with pitcher Tyler Robertson  in order to clear roster space for Sammy Solis, Michael Taylor, and Aaron Barrett.  The Nats wanted to protect those three prospects from the Rule 5 Draft.

Wooten is a 22-year-old, 37th-round draft pick of the A’s in the 2012 MLB draft.  He put together a nice season at Class A Beloit, batting .257 with 20 homers in 555 plate appearances.   Wooten also has flexability in the field, having also started games at third base, first base, and second base.
