When you need wins, they are never more satisfying than coming against the Philadelphia Phillies. the Phillies are exactly what was needed for these Nats.

The Washington Nationals have swept a three game series of the Phillies with a 6-0 shutout and a masterful performance from Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg threw a complete game shutout, allowing just 4 hits and fanning 10 Phillies to lead the Nats to a big win. Strasburg faced 29 Phillies at the plate. He lowered his season ERA to 2.83. It was Strasburg’s 10th career game in which he ended with double digit strikeouts. It only took him 82 pitches on the day.

Jayson Werth continued to haunt his former team, singling in the first run in the first inning to give Strasburg and the Nats an early 1-0 lead. Werth finished the day going 3-4 with a run and an RBI. He finished the series collecting 7 hits in 12 plate appearances and drove in 4 runs and scored 5 runs.

Wilson Ramos and Denard Span added RBI singles in the fourth inning to give the Nats a 3-0 lead. Ramos grounded into a fielders choice in the fifth inning that resulted in a throwing error which scored Werth and Ian Desmond. Steve Lombardozzi knocked in the final run in the same inning with an RBI single.

Span, Werth, Desmond, Ramos, and Lombardozzi each collected a multi hit game to lead the Nats 13 hit onslaught. The Nats will certainly be sad to see the Phillies leave, as they hammered Phillies pitching for 36 hits and 23 runs this weekend.

The Nats are off tomorrow and then begin a three game series against the SF Giants before heading to Atlanta for a big three game series with the NL East division leader.
