Nats keep winning, down Mets 6-3

The Washington Nationals continue to make an improbable run at the National League Wild Card, by defeating the New York Mets 6-3 last night, which pulled the Nats to within 6 games of the wild card spot.   With 18 games left int he season, the Nationals have won 6 of their last 7 and 21 of their last 30.

The Nats surge continues to be fueled at the plate by Jayson Werth.   Werth went 3 for 4 and smacked his 23rd home run of the season.  The red hot Werth is 10 for 18 in his last four games with 5 runs and 2 homers.  Werth’s batting average rose to .328 on the season.  Adam LaRoche and Scott Hairston also homered for the Nats, another three home run game for the Nationals.

The 11 hit, 6 run offensive production helped Jordan Zimmermann (17-8) notch his 17th win of the season, which lead the National League.  He threw 5 innings and allowed 8 hits and 3 runs.  Craig Stammen, Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard, and Rafael Soriano combined for four shutout innings from the bullpen, as Soriano notched his 40th save of the season.  In total, the bullpen allowed just 1 hit in those four innings.

Werth and LaRoche homered respectively in the first two innings to give the Nats an early 2-0 cushion.  One inning later, DEnard Span doubled down the line to extend his hitting streak to a major league leading 21 consecutive games.   Werth followed with an RBI double that scored Span.   Scott Hairston finished off the Mets with a run, pinch hit home run int he ninth inning.

The win improved the Nationals to a season high six games over .500 at 75-69.

Nats Streaks:

*  Denard Span extended his hitting streak to TWENTY-ONE games.

*  Jayson Werth extended his hitting streak to FOUR games and his run scoring streak to FOUR games.

*  Adam LaRoche extended his run scoring streak to FOUR games.

*  Wilson Ramos extended his hitting streak to FOUR games.

*  Drew Storen extended his scoreless streak to EIGHT innings and EIGHT games.

*  Rafael Soriano extended his scoreless streak to SEVEN games and SEVEN innings and has saves in EIGHT straight games.
