Nats call up Tanner Roark, Transfer Detwiler to 60 day DL

Updated: August 6, 2013

The Washington Nationals have moved starting pitcher Ross Detwiler to the 60 day disabled list.  That all but ensure that he will not return until at least early September, but likely is done for 2013 season.   Detwiler is suffering from a herniated disc in his back.

That was not all today out of Nationals Park.  After just one day from being recalled from Syracuse AAA, Xavier Cedeno returns to AA.  The Nationals have recalled start Tanner Roark.   Roark was acquired by the Nats in 2010 in the Christian Guzman deal.   Roark struggled to find wins in 2012, posting a 6-17 record with a 4.39 ERA.  However, Roark has had a breakout year at Syracuse this season, posting a 9-3 record with a solid 3.15 ERA in 33 appearances, 11 of which have been starts.  In 105.2 total innings, Roark has fanned 84 batters, compared to 20 walks.  More than likely, Roark will take over the role of long reliever that was held by Ross Ohlendorf.  Ohlendorf was placed on the 15 day DL two days ago.
