Nats AFL Update: Matt Purke gets first win
The Mesa Solar Sox remained undefeated at 2-0 with an 8-1 win yesterday.
Nats’ prospect CF Brian Goodwin was 1 for 5 with a run scored and 2 RBI. Matthew Skole went 0-4 with a walk and a runs scored.
Nats’ pitching prospect, Matt Purke, picked up his first win in his AFL debut. Purke tossed three innings and allowed two hits and a walk and unearned run while fanning tow batters. The Nationals remain high on Purke. Purke has surgery in the Fall of 2012 that led him to drop to the third round where the Nats grabbed him. One season prior, Purke was drafted 14th overall by Texas, but chose to go to college instead. As customary of the Washington Nationals, injury did not scare the Nats front office.
After ptiching in only 3 games in 2012, Purke started 18 games this season between Hagerstown (A) and Potomac (A). Art Hagerstown, Purke made 6 starts and was 1-1 with a 2.48 ERA. He fanned 41 batters in just 29 innings. Those numbers were good enough to get him promoted to High A Potomac. Purke finished the season in Potomac, having made 12 starts and posted a 5-3 record with a 4.48 ERA. In 61 innings, Purke issued 18 walks and struck out 41. He will more than likely start out the 2014 season at Potomac.
