Matt Williams introduced as Nats manager
Matt Williams was formally introduced at 2PM today as the fifth manager in Washington Nationals baseball club history. Williams takes over for retiring former manager Davey Johnson.
Williams had a few quality things to say about this opportunity in DC.
On the opportunity at hand . . . “This isn’t a situation where you come in and something is broken. This is a great team on the bring of something special.” “I am honored to be the Washington Nationals’ manager, and I’m ready to go. So thank you very much.”
On defense . . . “I do believe that you bring your glove every day. I think you can apply pressure defensively”
On bench coach Randy Knorr . . . “We have seen that they have given him their support during this process.
Williams also indicated that he will keep the current coaching staff intact. Bench coach Randy Knorr, who was also interviewed for the manager position, already indicated his desire to stay and was present at Williams’ presser. Williams indicated that he would prefer to add a seventh coach that would focus soley on defense. I think you can begin to see what Williams will be emphasizing. Williams indicated that coach would be Mark Weidemaier, who will follow Williams from Arizona.
