Kirk Cousins presser: RG3 still “franchise” QB
Kirk Cousins addressed the media today as the new starting quarterback of the Washington Redskins. That became obvious earlier today when Cousins took the practice snaps with the first team offense while Rex Grossman took snaps with the second team offense. Former starter Robert Griffin III will be deactivated on game day.
Cousins told the media it was offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan who informed him he would be starting this Sunday in Atlanta against the 3-10 Falcons. “It wasn’t anything dramatic,” said Cousins, adding “it shouldn’t change anything I’m doing this week to get ready.”
“I’m going to submit to the authorities and do what I’m coached to do,” said Cousins.
Cousins said “it’s tough” on Griffin to be benched and “he wants to be out there but I think he’s handling it with a lot of maturity.” Later, Cousins said Griffin had been positive today and has been taking “the high road.” He called Griffin “a competitor.”
Saying he couldn’t be concerned with how he got the starting job because he needs to focus on playing well, Cousins said “I want to be on the same page with the coaches,” Cousins says. “I want to be able to communicate openly with them.” He called it “wasted energy” to focus on the controversy surrounding the Redskins right now.
“I do believe that Robert is the franchise quarterback here in Washington,” said Cousins, adding that he doesn’t want to undermine Griffin’s place on the team.
