-Inside the Redskins: Episode 17

The Washington Redskins will play their final AFC opponent of the season on Sunday when they host the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 14. Kickoff at Fed Ex Field is set for 1 p.m. The Redskins are 2-1 against AFC West opponents this season, including a win at Oakland in Week 4 and a thrilling overtime victory against San Diego in Week 9. A win Sunday would represent Washington’s third against the AFC this season, which would match its best cross-conference mark since going 3-1 against the AFC South in 2002, the first season after divisional realignment. Washington is paced by its potent rushing attack, which leads the league with 1,805 yards this season. The Redskins have rushed for at least 100 yards in each of their last 11 games and have broken the 100-yard rushing barrier in 26 of their 28 regular season games since the start of the 2012 season. Washington has 41 games with 100 or more rushing yards in the Mike Shanahan era.The Redskins are 195 yards away from breaking the 2,000-yard rushing barrier for a second consecutive season, a feat the team has not accomplished since the 2005-06 seasons.

Head coach Andy Reid, now in his 15th NFL season as a head coach and his first with Kansas City, leads the Chiefs into Washington following a 35-28 home loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 12. After a 9-0 start to the 2013 season, the Chiefs are currently in second place in the AFC West at 9-3. Quarterback Alex Smith commands the Chiefs’ offense in his first season with the team. Through 12 games, Smith has completed 261-of-440 passes for 2,736 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. Sixth-year running back Jamaal Charles leads the Chiefs’ rushing attack and is first in the AFC in attempts and rushing yards. Charles has amassed 1,011 yards on 219 carries with nine rushing touchdowns. Smith has also contributed 64 carries for 360 rushing yards with one touchdown on the ground. Charles is also Kansas City’s leading receiver with 55 receptions for 452 yards and two touchdowns. Seventh-year wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has caught 45 passes for 533 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Dexter McCluster has compiled 417 yards on 42 receptions and one touchdown. Linebacker Derrick Johnson, now in his ninth NFL season, leads the Chiefs’ defense in tackles with 92 (83 solo). Linebacker Justin Houston is fourth in the NFL with 11.0 sacks, while linebacker Tamba Hali has 9.0 sacks in 2013. Safety Quintin Demps leads the Chiefs with four of the team’s 14 interceptions. Rookie cornerback Marcus Cooper has three interceptions this season. Ryan Succop handles the kicking duties for Kansas City and is 20-of-23 on field goal attempts this season. Punter Dustin Colquitt has punted 71 times for an average of 45.4 yards per punt. Demps is the Chiefs’ kick returner and has returned 23 kicks for an average of 27.9 yards per return. McCluster is the primary punt returner and has brought back 47 punts for 454 yards and one touchdown.
