As the NFL entered play on Thanksgiving Day, there were 24 teams either in or within one game of a playoff spot, including 10 in the NFC. Entering the late games this afternoon, Atlanta was the only NFL team that had been officially eliminated.
The Redskins will play the second game of a three-game home stand on Sunday night when they host the New York Giants at Fed Ex Field. Cool, cloudy and calm conditions expected on Sunday night. Sunday’s meeting will be the 163rd between the Redskins and Giants all-time and with home wins against the Giants in 2011 and 2012, the Redskins are seeking their first three-game home winning streak against the Giants since a four game run from 1982-85. Washington has lost three straight, is 0-4 in prime time nationally televised games and has clinched a 10th losing season since 2000.
After an 0-6 start, the Giants have climbed back to 4-7. If not for a narrow loss to Dallas last week, New York would be riding a five game win streak. Now in his 10th NFL season, quarterback Eli Manning once again leads the Giants’ offense. Through 11 games this season, Manning has completed 224-of-394 passes for 2,760 yards, 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Running back Andre Brown, in his third season with New York, leads the Giants’ rushing attack with 69 carries for 308 yards and one rushing touchdown. Wide receiver Victor Cruz paces the Giants with 60 receptions for 851 yards and four touchdowns. Cornerback Prince Amukamara leads the Giants’ defense in tackles with 61. Eighth-year defensive end Mathias Kiwankua has amassed a team-leading four sacks this season. Antrel Rolle leads the Giants and is tied for first in the NFL with five interceptions.

-At 4-7, the New York Daily news looks ahead to 2014.
At 3-8, the Redskins are going nowhere fast. The main question everyone is asking… where does the team go from here? The Redskins running game has been effective, running back Alfred Morris is closing in on 1,000 yards on the ground, leads the NFL’s top ranked rushing attack. Pierre Garcon has a chance to break some club records and he may get some help this week. The ‘Skins defense has really struggled defending the pass, ranked 25th in the league. Injuries have plagued the ‘Skins defensive unit and now defensive end Stephen Bowen is done for the season, scheduled for knee surgery next week. We may get our first look at Chase Minnifield on Sunday night as the cornerback has been called up from the practice squad. Washington has given up 37 touchdowns this season, the most in the NFL. The good news? The Giants have committed a league high 30 turnovers this season.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worst for RG3, it did. It started immediately after the beat down at the hands of San Francisco on Monday night in front of a national TV audience. Ahmad Brooks of the 49ers said that Griffin had not fully recovered from his knee injury and shouldn’t be on the field. Just about that same time, more off the field drama and the discussion surrounding RG3′s father, Robert Junior showing up in the locker room following the prime time loss. Griffin responded to RG2′s presence post game, telling those that questioned his family to “back up“. As for Griffin’s on the field struggles, Kirk Cousins fan club President Jon Gruden weighed in, saying the Redskins needed to give their backup QB a shot. Some believe that the franchise would be best served by benching RG3 and let him heal up for 2014. The other side of that argument is that Griffin needs every snap he can get, given the missed off-season due to injury rehab heading into the 2013 season. Griffin’s value entering the 2012 NFL draft weighed heavily on his running ability. What we are seeing now is him trying to adjust to life after a second knee surgery and become a pocket passer. Then there is this, QB guru: RG3′s issues could be more mental than physical. Several weeks ago we wondered if the slew of draft picks given up for the chance to draft Griffin was too steep. As glaring weaknesses continue to get exposed, week in and week out, more are asking if the St. Louis Rams got the better of the ‘Skins in the deal. Some are asking if the Redskins made a mistake even selecting Griffin, much less considering the hefty price tag. ESPN’s Adam Schefter says the Rams could get richer in the ’14 NFL Draft: The price for RG III is rising. Regardless, Griffin is having a season to forget.
