PFF - Trent Williams 28th best player in NFL

    28. Trent Williams, LT, WAS

I remember when Williams looked massively out of his depth as a rookie. Now he just fends off pass rushers with the kind of ease you’d expect from a man taken fourth overall. The five penalties aren’t ideal, but he’s one of these rare tackles who can do a job in pass protection and contribute in the run game. Taking the step to elite status.

Key Stat: His 97.2 pass blocking efficiency is fourth of all left tackles.
Its about time someone started to realize that he has been playing pretty darn good football this year. To me he has been playing like a #1 pick. We need to extend his contract for a long time, especially if he keeps improving the way he has.

Am I missing something? Looks to me like he's got a six year deal until 2016:
    "7/30/2010: Signed a six-year, $60 million contract. The deal includes $36.75 million guaranteed. 2012: $11 million (+ $1 million reporting bonus), 2013: $5 million (+ $1 million reporting bonus), 2014: $7.25 million (+ $1.75 million reporting bonus), 2015: $10.25 million (+ $2 million reporting bonus), 2016: Free Agent"

I'd rather wait and see that he stays out of trouble and stays healthy.

i'm confused as to what you are asking . . . he was drafted in 2010, signed his rookie contract in 2010 and i still playing on that rookie contract now . . . contract is as follows:

    Contract:6 yr(s) / $60,000,000 Signing Bonus $3,000,000 Average Salary $10,000,000 End Year:2015 Free Agent:2016 / Restricted

BASE SALARY S. BONUS MISC. BONUS CAP HIT
    2010 2,398,000 500,000 - 2,898,000
    2011 7,852,000 500,000 1,500,000 9,852,000
    2012 11,000,000 500,000 2,500,000 14,000,000
    2013 5,000,000 500,000 2,500,000 8,000,000
    2014 7,250,000 500,000 3,250,000 11,000,000
    2015 10,250,000 500,000 3,500,000 14,250,000

i do find the cap hit in the above info interesting as if accurate he would cost 6 mil less next year than this . . .

I guess I don't understand why we need to extend his contract now, since it is not really up until 2016. And I worry about him failing another drug test which I think would mean a 1 year suspension.

No problem, you understand the cap issues a lot better than I do...I will probably never understand that stuff!

Truthfully i do not want him anywhere near Free Agency. After this year he would have 2 more years left. I would go ahead and give a 3 - 4 year extention now and take some of his cap hit in the next 2 years and move it back when we get our additional cap space back. So we save cap space in the 2 years(or 1 however they do the contract) and extend one of our best players in one move letting us get better defensive players.

But i do get your point about him staying away from the drugs. Could always add a stipulation in the contract about that.(but i dont think they would)
