Just for fun, our first look at who the Redskins might be looking at in the 2013 NFL draft. Picks projected at draftsite.com were used as a guide of who might be available in each round.
DISCUSS THIS IN OUR REDSKINS FAN FORUM!
1st Round- To St. Louis (Robert Griffin III)
2nd Round- Robert Lester FS Alabama 6'2" 207
3rd Round- Brennan Williams RT North Carolina 6'7" 315
4th Round- Nigel Malone CB Kansas State 5'10" 180
5th Round- Josh Johnson CB Purdue 5'11" 195
5th Round- Tobias Smith G Mississippi State 6'3" 305
6th Round- Dave Kruger NT Utah 6'5" 290
7th Round- Mario Benavides C Louisville 6'4" 305
What do the Redskins need? Any players you have been following you would like to see in Burgundy and Gold next season?

All i can say is that the 7th round pick of Mario Benavides would be the most epic pick of all time! Well just for me! lol.
i would immediately go out and buy this guys jersey and this is no joke! We have the same last name!

i do not think C Mario would be around in the 7th. Think he goes more around the 5th.
As a Bama fan and a Skins fan i would not want Lester here. To me he has regressed quite a bit. Would prefer Shawn Williams from UGA over Lester. But i think i would go CB with our 2nd rounder like Blidi Wreh-Wilson or Terry Hawthorne if available. If not then i may lean to a OG in the 2nd.

I thought I read somewhere thht during the Bye Week, Shanny was either at Washington or Washington State game. If true, he was scouting someone. Just like he did last year when he visited Florida Atlantic. We all know how that turned out.

First, welcome to DCPSR!! . . . and i don't mind the draft picks here, there is no RT . . . and IMO, since CB and RT are more expensive and harder to find in the draft than FS my first 2 picks would be a CB and RT, in either order, depending on who is available!!

I would love to get rhodes in the 2nd round. To me that would be one heck of a steal. i would be really happy with this draft to tell you the truth.
Edit. I would agree a RT is definitely needed tho. i would hope that would be addressed in FA.

Thanks for the "welcome" I've been around for a while, but I mostly just read. I think, if I remember correctly, the last time I posted was before a site upgrade. Probably about some off-season stuff.
Anyway, I'd love for us to pick up some secondary help in FA. Someone like Jairus Byrd would be great. With Meriweather
healthy, I think we'd be fine there. Depth, as always, would be welcomed. It would also be super cool if we could finagle a young, quality RT in FA as well. I doubt we'll go crazy, I think those days are behind us, but I don't think we really need to. Keep the good guys we have, release some expensive contracts or restructure, and fill in the gaps. Secondary and O-Line. Any other upgrades we add will just be icing on the cake.
I really hope that Minnifield works out. I was surprised that we didn't draft him, but he slipped and I think we got a gift. Not to mention all the other players we have on IR/PUP/whatever. Redskins.com lists 12. We get them back and we'll be in business.... if they can stay healthy.
All that said, aside from the obvious needs. I'd like us to add a young, talented receiver to work along side Garcon and grow with Griff and Morris. I know Garcon is only 26, but it'd be nice to have 2 of him :)
my wish list:
1 - CB (or 2) ... (or 3) :-D
2 - RT
3 - S (SS & FS) compete for starting job
4 - OLB (for quality deapth)
5 - WR (to grow with our other young guys
6 - O-line deapth across the board
OG seems set and we have tons of depth in my opinion, but Tackle and center scare me a bit.
each week, hearing that Trent may not go or didn't practice weighs on my mind.
7 - more defense.
maybe End could use depth?
maybe we could use a better more "natural" nose?
something to get more pressure.

i remember you now . . . well welcome back to the land of the posting . . . again!! :) . . .
i agree with secondary help in FA, especially FS as i think out of our positions of need, FS is the cheapest on the free agent market . . . and would LOVE Jarius Byrd!! He is a ball hawk for sure, only knock on him is he is not the fastest, but he does have great instincts . . .
CB's and Tackles are very pricey in FA, so i'd prefer we use the draft to help out here, unless we can find someone at a discount that just wants to be RGIII's RT!!
order of priority IMO:
CB
FS
RT
NT

Not to hijack this thread, but how active do you all think we'll be in Free Agency this year?
I'd like to see us cut/restructure some contracts and free up some cash. I fear some guys I like will be gone next year (Moss, Fletch, Cooley...), but with many of them it's probably time to move on. Others, like Banks, Doughty and Brown, I wouldn't mind seeing go.
I read somewhere that Releasing Moss, Cooley, and Hall on March 1 would save the Redskins $16.1 million on the salary cap for 2013 and we can free up quite a bit of money by cutting/restructuring other contracts as well.
If we do this, I'm hoping we can pick up 2 or 3 quality free agents and hit the rest of our needs in the draft.

as long as they are smart, absolutely . . . young, on the up swing players in the secondary would be fantastic . . .

The team clearly needs to address both safety positions, cornerback and right tackle. They also need to figure out what they want to do at tight end. They can bring back Fred Davis, but at what price? He will be an unrestricted free agent coming off a drug suspension in 2011 and a bad Achilles Tendon tear [no such thing as a good one] in 2012. Do they franchise him again, thus giving him a raise over this year that he hasn't earned? That seems far-fetched to me. Or do they let him test the free agent market and see what offers there are for a damaged product? I think that's what will wind up happening.
We can't go into next year with Logan Paulsen as our starting tight end. I like the kid, he's smart and a hard worker. He's a great success story considering pretty much nobody wanted him coming out of UCLA. But he's got to be your backup tight end, not your starter. A quality receiving tight end who can handle himself as a blocker on the edge in those read option plays would make this offense scary as hell. We need one pretty urgently. Paulsen blocks well enough, but he's not the downfield threat we need at that position.
I think the Shanahans were hoping Niles Paul would turn into that player, but I don't see any evidence that is happening. His transition to tight end has been pretty difficult to watch at times.

I understand that the Skins are effectively putting together a case to fight the cap space lost a season ago. Obviously, it was split over two seasons, I read an article that projects the Skins might not only get to keep the half that is expected to be taken away this off-season, but also recoup some of last season's penalty! How about that!

I like that draft, positions of need and some really good guys.
I wasn't sure on some of the later round guys so I looked them up. While I was there I thought, "what the heck" I'll post them all for everyone to see (info from nfldraftscout.com). I've attached them at the end of this post. I don't think Gragg will be available in the 6th round, but I've been wrong before (see Minnifield). I also can't see Tyrann going un-drafted until the 4th round even with all of his "issues" unfortunately, sometimes, it seems talent outweighs reason with some teams. If it works out though, I'd be happy giving him a shot. Especially if the draft pans out like you have listed :-)
Somehow, I think Shannahan will throw a RB or WR in there (possibly late round) just to throw us all for a loop.

I was surprised by Burfict and Minnifield. I wanted both. Getting both as UFA would have been a dream.
As it turns out, one of my friends is a Bengals fan and had no idea who the guy was when they brought him in. He said, "camp fodder" so I bet him $20 that Burfict would be starting by the end of the year.
At least I got a free lunch out of him. Would rather have him on the team though.

I think that Mara is the one who should be fined for conflict of interest!! The day before FA and we get the fine!!
Any link or is this just rumor. With all of the hits that Goodall has taken and the inept handling of BountyGate maybe the Skins cut a deal to avoid them joining or aiding the NLFPA?

Using NewNFLDraft.com as my player pool. I select for the Redskins anyone available at each pick, based on who is available in the NewNFLDraft latest mock.
2) Demond Trufant CB Washington- Trufant is a good one and the Redskins needs to focus on offensive tackle, cornerback and safety in this draft. Trufant is the first of several DB's taken in the 2013 draft.
3) Brennan Williams T UNC- I end up picking him in just about every mock. Projects as booked with Trent for the remainder of the decade.
4) D.J. Swearinger S South Carolina- Nasty athlete fills a real need. We can hope that Tanard Jackson is in the lineup by October and that Brandon Meriweather is healthy, otherwise need some additional talent.
5) Collin Klein ATH Kansas State- Does he project as a safety at the next level? Emergency option quarterback? Big, hard working kid is a playmaker.
5) Johnny Adams CB Michigan State- Washington needs to continue to pump new blood into the secondary. Will Minnifield pan out? Will DeAngelo Hall rework his contract or be let go?
6) Chris Gragg TE Arkansas- One of the top tight ends in the Southeastern Conference. Paulsen overachieved this season and lets face it Niles Paul isn't a tight end. If Fred Davis isn't brought back, at least one tight end needs to be brough into camp.
7) Omar Hunter DT Florida- With Chris Neild coming off injury, the Redskins need an insurance policy behind Barry Cofield. Hunter was a major part of an absolute wrecking crew on the defensive side of the ball for the Gators.

The only pick i do not like is Colin Klein. I am sure there are better picks there have to pickup a RB or LB.
I do not like Royster backing up Morris. He is a liability picking up the blitz. he about got killed cousins killed by whiffing on his blitz pickup.
And we always need LBers especially with Fletcher getting older.

Yes, I guess I just got caught up in the Klein hype. He has been mentioned as a possible defender in the back seven. I could see adding one linebacker in the draft, but there are alot of options on the roster, especially if Robinson returns strong.

hmmm . . . Marcus Davis got the height and speed that we are missing at WR . . . listed at 6'3" - 230lbs and running a 4.35 40 is pretty impressive . . . wonder with those measurements why he is ranked as the 16th WR . . .
MIA DB Brandon McGee . . . has decent size and speed at 6'0" - 200lb . . . running a 4.4 40 . . . played QB for his first 3 years, moved to cb as a senior . . . a bit raw, but might be a decent later round prospect . . .
KSU S Bradley McDougal . . . decent size and speed at 6'1" - 210 lbs . . . runs a 4.45 40 . . . played FS . . . 3 picks as a senior . . . 2nd team big 12 . . . again, a later round pick IMO . . .
LB Sam Barrington . . . seems a little small for me, so must be projected as a MLB . . . is 6'2" - 210lbs . . . does run a 4.6 40, so has good speed . . . if he can bulk up and keep the speed his measurable would be good, but will need at least another 25 pounds added to the frame

As we move past the All-Star games and approach the combine, I am really hoping the Redskins get LSU safety Eric Reid. He had a better season in 2011 as a sophomore, but that is good news, as they now have a chance to get him. I am also hoping they get a CB either in 2nd or 3rd round (with safety being the other) as I am actually one that feels Tyler Polumbus is more than adequate at RT. Given the cap situation (and penalty) they are really going to have to make the right moves. Hall needs to restructure, Moss is probably gone and if Fletcher does retire- at least there will be savings there as well.

The more i watched CB Jordan Poyer the more i want the skins to draft him. Not sure if he will still be there in the 2nd tho.

The only name I saw tied to Washington was Phillip Thomas. Jordan Reed was a clear fall they could not pass up on. Reed even admitted he had no prior contact with the team. Selecting two running backs was a bit odd. I know Shanny has an obsession with drafting running backs, but two?
