Caps snaps four game losing streak, defeat Lightning 4-3

Eric Fehr deflected a Mike Green shot with 51 seconds left in the game to lift the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 win, snapping a four game losing streak. Fehr’s game winning tally was his second goal of the game and his 8th of the season.

Tyler Johnson gave the home town team the early 1-0 lead scoring at the 4:08 mark of the first period. Washington would retaliate with three consecutive goals in the first period, to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. Fehr notched the equalizer three minutes later to start the three goal onslaught. Fehr’s wrist shot was assisted by Alex Ovechkin and Karl Alzner.

Mikhail Grabovski gave the Caps a 2-1 lead on a Washington man advantage half way through the first frame. Grabo’s goal was his 12th of the season. It was assisted by Joel Ward and Mike Green. The power plant tally came off a wrister from Green that was deflected by Grabovski. With just 12 seconds left in the first period, Marcus Johansson scored on another power play with his common wrap around to the net. This time Johansson buried it. That sent Washington into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead and a 2 for 2 mark on the man advantage.

BJ Crombeen scored the second periods goal at the 6:45 mark to pull Tampa Bay to a one goal deficit.

Ondrej Palat evened the score late in the third period at the 14:30 mark, beating Caps goalie Phillip Grubauer. Late in the third, looking as,if the game was heading toward overtime, Fehr struck on the deflection for the game winner with 51 seconds left.

Overall, the Caps played an overall sloppy game, allowing too many odd me rushes and getting out shot 36-20. However, they walked out of Tampa with a much needed two standing points, allowing the Caps to jump over Carolina to third place in the metro division. For a career note, Mike Green’s assist on the Fehr game winner gave him his 300th career assist.

Phillip Grubauer earned the win by stopping 33 of 36 shots on goal.
