Caps down Flyers 6-3 in preseason finale
The Washington Capitals finished the preseason with a 6-3 win over hated rival Philadelphia Flyers to finish the preseason 4-0-3. Alexander Ovechkin and Eric Fehr scored two goals apiece to lead the Caps offense.
Much like the previous preseason games, the Caps shows grit, clashing In five different fights during the game.
Washington took an early 3-0 lead. Eric Fher scored his first tally just 1:40 into the game to give the Caps an early 1-0 lead. Ovechkin made it 2-0 at the 15:31 mark with a power play goal to increase the Caps lead to 2-0, which is where it ended at the end of the first period. Rookie Tom Wilson put the Caps up 3-0 with his third preseason tally at the 11:41 mark of the second period.
Philadelphia would battle back and score three consecutive goals in a little over a four minute span. Claude Giroux, Scotty Hartnell, and Wayne Simmonds tallied for the Flyers.
The Caps owned the third period, out scoring the Flyers 3-0. Fehr notched his second of the game and fourth in the. Also two games just 1:35 into the third period to give the Caps a lead they would not relinquish. Ovechkin follow with his fourth goal of the preseason and his second power play marker of the game to give the Caps a 5-3 advantage. Mathieu Perreault capped of Washington’s six goals with an empty net marker late in the third period.
Michal Neuvirth stayed in net the whole game, stopping 32 of 35 shots to end the preseason a perfect 2-0. Washington was 2 for 5 on the man advantage.
The Caps open the season on Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks.
