The Washington Capitals got a needed win coming off a holiday layoff, with a 3-2 win at the Verizon Center tonight.  Eric Fehr notched the game winner at the 14;51 mark to lift the Caps to the 3-2 win.

Phillip Grubauer stopped 38 of 40 shots to earn the win, in his sixth start in the last nine games.  It is pretty clear that Adam Oates is pretty comfortable with Grubauer and the way he is playing.  He certainly is making the Caps’ goaltending more complicated, with radon Holtby and Michal Neuvirth watching Grubauer from the bench.  Gruby made some pretty nifty saves in the final 5 minutes to preserve the Capitals win.

Washington got not he board first with a bomb from Mike Green in the first period to give the Caps a 1-0 lead.  It was Green’s 3rd tally of the season.   Although the Caps were outshot 14-7 in the opening period, The Caps took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Ben Pouliot scored just 1:37 into the second period to knot the game up at 1-1.  It would stay that way until the 18:55 mark when Nicklas Bacstrom scored his 10th goal of the season on a  wrister that was assisted by Steve Oleksy.  The Caps were again outshot int he second period, 18-13.

Once again, the Ranger scored an equalizer quickly at the commencement of the final period.  Carl Hagelin beat Grubauer to tie the game up just 17 second sing he third period.   The Caps and Rangers fiercely battled throughout the third period, as you would expect between these two arch rivals.  Fehr notched the game winner  at the 14:51 mark, assisted by Backstrom.   Overall, Fehr had a nice game, earning 16:17 of ice time, putting 6 shots on net, recording 2 hits and 2 blocked shots.  Backstrom left the Caps with 2 points, a goal and an assist.
