Caps’ Backstrom in Olympics, Johansson out

Washington Capitals top line centerman Nicklas Backstrom has been named to the Swedish Winter Olympic team.  Fellow Cap and Swede Marcus Johansson was snubbed.

Backstrom was a given for the Swede team.  He is having an excellent season with the Capitals.  In 42 games, Backstrom has 10 goals and 36 assists.  Backstrom is 8th overall in the NHL in total points, fourth overall in assists, and leads the NHL in power play assists.  Backstrom’s selection will mark his second Olympic appearance, having played for Sweden in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.  During those Olympics, Backstrom recorded 1 goal and 5 five assists in four games.

Meanwhile, fellow Cap Marcus Johansson was left off the Swede Olympic team.   Johansson has 6 goals and 22 assists in 42 games this season.
