Art Monk, Darrel Green say Redskins should consider a new name
Washington Redskins Dan Snyder says he will “never” change the name of the team, but two of the greatest and most popular Redskins players of all time think Snyder should think again. Former Redskins WR Art Monk and former CB Darrell Green, both of whom entered the Hall of Fame in 2008, told local radio station WTOP that the team should consider changing the name to avoid offending people.
“[If] Native Americans feel like Redskins or the Chiefs or [another] name is offensive to them, then who are we to say to them ‘No, it’s not?’” Monk told the radio station. …
“It deserves and warrants conversation because somebody is saying, ‘Hey, this offends me,’” Green told the radio station.
My own view is that the team should change the name, though I know that’s an extremely unpopular opinion with many Redskins fans and many of our readers. That Washington’s all-time leaders in receptions, receiving yards and interceptions — and probably the two most popular players in the last 35 years — believe the team should consider changing the name will probably keep the discussion on this topic lively for some time.
But will their opinions affect the opinion of Dan Snyder? I suspect not.
