Smoke Signals: Calling all chauffeurs!

First things first: Go read our latest edition of Redskins Round Table if you have not done so already. In fact, even if you have, go back and read it because we added Ryan O’Halloran to our panel of experts this week. Ryan’s answers came in a day late, so they were not included in our original post, but we’ve added them now and they should be read by every Redskins fan who wants to be informed. So if you haven’t read the Round Table yet, do it now! If you’ve already read it, go back and read O’Halloran’s answers. Then you’ll be up to date. Do it now!

In today’s must-read article, Rich Tandler goes over the high and low points of Redskins training camp, which wrapped up yesterday afternoon. He correctly lists poor play from the offensive line reserves as a major worry. On the other hand, FS Kareem Moore & LT Trent Williams have exceeded expectations and injuries have been rare. As I noted, it’s a must-read article so go read it. Now.

The players liked their first Mike Shanahan training camp. SLB Brian Orakpo, speaking for many:

“This is how you do camp, this is how you get your guys motivated to come out and work instead of banging and two-a-days, which is nonsense,” he said.

Translation: Do training camp the Mike Shanahan Way.

Fred Davis was in court recently to handle traffic violation issues. Trent Williams likes to drive too fast. Add Malcolm Kelly to the list of Redskins who might consider hiring a chauffeur. In fact, put this guy at the front of the line:

Redskins receiver Malcolm Kelly missed a date in Fairfax County General District court Wednesday, resulting in him missing practice and rehabilitation work Thursday morning.

Kelly, who also did not appear at a May 13 court date, had to answer to three misdemeanor traffic charges. …

Kelly’s three misdemeanors, according to the court’s website records, were improper/erratic lane change (July 1), not having a license in his possession (July 1), failure to obey a highway sign (April 7). The highway sign fine of $100 has been outstanding since May 13. During the same April 7 stop, he was cited for driving with a suspended or revoked license but the charge was not pursued.

The third-year player also has a lengthy traffic record in Loudoun County: Tinted/smoked windshield, two speeding tickets and two failure to obey highway sign violations. All of those fines – which dated back to 2008 – have been paid.

How long before Malcolm Kelly has more TD catches than traffic tickets?

DL Albert Haynesworth doesn’t do well in the heat. Too bad its August, I guess. Will he play in the second preseason game on Saturday night? Only if he practices well today, says Head Coach Mike Shanahan.

Mike Jones at TBD goes over the jobs that are still up for grabs with training camp over and 3 preseason games yet to be played. It’s a good article so read it.

Expect the starters to go about 30 plays on Saturday against the Ravens. That should cover most of the first half.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: WR Devin Thomas is “making progress” and “looks great” and so on and so forth. Let’s hope this time is the real time. Still, I expect him to be in the starting lineup in week 1 against Dallas.

TB Larry Johnson, who will get a long look against that stout Ravens rush defense tomorrow night, is happy to be back home [he's a Maryland native] and playing for the team he grew up loving. This is probably Larry’s last chance at a significant role on an NFL team so he needs to make this count. A good showing tomorrow night would help.

Rick Snider points out that this Redskins-Ravens game is not a grudge match because there is no rivalry between these teams. That’s correct, of course. Also, it’s preseason.

John Keim previews the Ravens game, pointing out the players who have a lot at stake. I’m keen to see if WR/PR Brandon Banks can make some plays from scrimmage so he doesn’t have to rely solely on punt returning abilities to make the team. I’m also interested to see how RT Jammal Brown, who sat out the Buffalo game and has missed a lot of time with a hip injury, plays against a solid and aggressive front 7 from Baltimore.
