Although DL Albert Haynesworth failed his conditioning test for the second time in two days earlier this morning, he will take the test again on Saturday. Soon after the morning practice ended Haynesworth came back out and worked on his conditioning with Defensive Coordinator Jim Haslett and assistant Jacob Burney. Here’s some video of it:
But is Head Coach Mike Shanahan going too far by making Haynesworth take conditioning test over and over again?
some players have privately expressed concern that Coach Mike Shanahan is simply trying to make an example of Haynesworth because he skipped all but one day of Shanahan’s first offseason program. One Redskins defensive player said few players are capable of passing the test only Haynesworth has been required to take because he failed to attend at least 50 percent of the Redskins’ offseason workouts.
Even some team officials acknowledge Haynesworth is clearly in shape and has dropped about 35 pounds since last season. Shanahan is expected to address the situation after practice.
“I’m tired of this [expletive],” Haynesworth told NBC4 Thursday evening. “I just want to get out on field and play football.
One way to look at this is making himself the Big Bad Coach is one good way for Mike Shanahan to ease Haynesworth way back into the good graces of the other players. A number of players, particularly ILB London Fletcher, DE Phillip Daniels and OLB Andre Carter were publicly critical of Haynesworth for skipping an entire offseason worth of work. Looks like these critics may soon be passing Big Al a bottle of water under the hot sun.
