The Washington Nationals are not the top selling merchandise franchise, not even close. The Washington Nationals are no where close to the top of MLB in attendance. In fact, according to ESPN the Nationals are ranked 21st in attendance, actually not that bad given the newness and lack of consistency in winning.
However, the Washington Nationals now sit atop one thing, the top selling MLB Jersey in Major league Baseball. Yes, you guessed it, it is the jersey of rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg. No, this is actually quite remarkable. According to MLB:
* More than 78,000 Strasburg jerseys were sold through July 1, making his the top-selling Nats jersey of all time. Yes, in one month he outpaced the entire career of Ryan Zimmerman for jersey sales.
* Strasburg’s jersey was the best-selling MLB model in June, and he is believed to have sold more jerseys in that month than any player in his first month in MLB history. Take that, Cy Young. [Bolded for emphasis]
This is quite remarkable when you think about it. It isn’t surprising that Stephen Strasburg would sell the most jersey on the Nats. It isn’t surprising that Strasburg would become the top jersey seller in Nationals history. BUT, in ONE MONTH! Wow. One, that tells you the immense popularity of the young phenom pitcher, a popularity that expands outside the beltway. Two, it also tells you how pathetic Nationals jersey sales have been as a franchise since the location to the District.
Regardless, congrats to Stephen Strasburg on yet another success and achievement. You can grab his jersey right here at the MLB Store.
