Redskins trade for DL Adam Carriker

The Redskins acquired DL Adam Carriker, the 13th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, from the St. Louis Rams in exchange for swapping picks in the 5h round. The Redskins moved down from the 135th pick to 163rd pick in the draft and in return they get a young defensive lineman who missed all of 2009 with a torn shoulder muscle. Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett held the same position with the Rams when St. Louis selected Carriker out of Nebraska.

Here is the Scouts, Inc. profile on Carriker:

Carriker suffered an ankle injury last season and was moved from NT to UT where he could be a better fit going forward. Carriker has good size and strength with good quickness. He can be physical playing the run. He has enough strength to control the center and keep LBs free from behind. He reacts well and shows good effort and toughness. He is quick enough to penetrate and disrupt blocking schemes but tends to play slightly upright where he can get washed inside at times. Athletically he has good agility. He can sink his weight and locate the ball quick inside. As a pass rusher he is active inside but needs to refine his up field moves. He can create the inside push when he reverts to the power rush but is missing the quick burst to clear at this time. His ability to combine his moves needs developing. Overall, an active, intense player inside whose second season production was affected by injury during the year.

It’s pretty amazing the Rams are giving up on Carriker, who turns 26 in about 3 weeks. St. Louis is essentially trading Carriker for almost nothing, so it’s a no-brainer trade for the Redskins. Carriker is considered well-suited to play defensive end in a 3-4 defense, something he hasn’t been able to do  much of in the NFL so far. He’ll do that in Washington and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he won the starting job in 2010. If Carriker doesn’t pan out, all the Redskins lost was a few draft slots — they didn’t even have to give up a pick for him. In addition, Carriker isn’t even earning a lot of money because he wasn’t a top 5 pick and he’s still on his rookie contract. He’ll be paid $1.07 million in 2010 and $1.42 million in 2011 if he’s still on the team.

The Redskins keep acquiring defensive linemen — they have signed Ma’ake Kemoeatu, Anthony Bryant, Greg Peterson, Howard Green — and that should tell you something. Albert Haynesworth will not be a member of the Washington Redskins for much longer. Let’s just hope Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen don’t get taken to the cleaners by the Titans or some other NFL team.
