Stand back and take a deep breath. The Washington Nationals have now won 2 of their last 3, defeating the NY Mets today 4-3. The Nats offense only produced 5 hits all day and veteran OF Willy Tavares provided 2 of them. Not just that. Tavares also knocked in all 4 Nats runs.
Tavares drove in 2 of the 4 runs in the second inning with a triple to deep center field that scored Josh Willingham and Ivan Rodriguez. The lead did not even last a frame when the Mets countered in the bottom of the 2nd inning with 2 runs of their own. Two innings later, Tavares single in Adam Dunn and Ian Desmond to give the Nationals a 4-2 lead, one they would not relinquish. The Mets did get 1 run back in the fifth inning.
John Lannan pitched his second start going 5 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Tyler Clippard was the start on the mound, continuing to show impressive stuff, tossing 3 scoreless innings and striking out 7 batters.
Question from this game . . . Is it perhaps time for the Nationals to take a look at Clippard in the rotation? Clippard was a natural starter in the NY Yankees system, one of the top prospects, when he was dealt to the Nationals. He has been an effective and often impressive long reliever for the Nats. But again, given the fact the Nationals are not in any way deep in the starting rotation, should the National look at Clippard for a few starts? I mean, can he really be worse than Garrett Mock?
Matt Capps came in the ninth inning in the closer role and struggled again, allow two runners, on a single and walk. But Capps struck out Jason Bay and got a line out by Rod Barajas to close the game and earn his 2nd save.
