RED ALERT: Thrashers up tonight

AUTHOR: PennSkinsFan | IN: Red Alert | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Washington Capitals have two games left in the regular season before embarking on the long awaited Stanley up Playoffs.  Tonight they faceoff against the Atlanta Thrasher in their 81st game of the season.  The game is meaningless from both perspectives, the Caps having wrapped up everything they can, the Thrashers eliminated from the playoffs.  But, as we pointed out yesterday, there still are some thing to play for in these final two outings.

As for goalies, the Washington Post writes that Caps HC Bruce Boudreau has made no decision for playoff goalie and may very well go with goalie by committee between Jose Theodore and Semyon Varlamov. Tell us by commenting in this post.

Our FanSided partner, Capitals Outsider, has a picture of Lord Stanley.  Man, is it getting close or what?

Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby scored twice last night, jumping him two above Alex Ovechkin with 50 goals to Ovie’s 48 goals.  I suspect we will see a highly motivated Ovechkin.  In addition, for tonight’s game, the Capitals will celebrate their first ever President’s Trophy.   As for Ovie, don’t expect any rest for him this weekend.

Congrats to Caps G Jose Theodore, being nominated for the Masterton Trophy.

The Masterton trophy is given annually by the Professional Hockey Writers Association to the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.” Theodore is one of 30 nominees for the award, and the winner will be announced at the NHL Awards show in Las Vegas in June.

“Obviously it was a tough season and it was hard to focus and do my job sometimes, but I am really proud of that nomination,” Theodore said. “I think this season has been the most rewarding for me just from when training camp started and I didn’t know how I was going to react. It is nice to have people feel for what I went through.”

One of the best seasons of his career has come after the death of his infant son this past summer from complications stemming from his premature birth. Not only has Theodore been outstanding on the ice and in the dressing room, he’s been remarkable dealing with the media and with fans.

He also started “Saves for Kids” a charitable program that benefits the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s National Medical Center.

Good luck Jose, you deserve it

Jim Kelly from CNNSI gives Duncan Keith the nod over Mike Green for the Norris.  Kelly leans Henrik Sedin for the Hart.  Funny thing is, the Caps are by far the best team in the NHL, one of the best offensive juggernaut’s in the NHL in some time, yet writers recognize none of them?

Caps Blog linksOn Frozen Blog does a story on Melissa Allen.  Melissa is a follower of our on Twitter and reads our site from time to time.  Go read it.   We agree, the Hart should be a two way race, and that race should not include Crosby.   The case for Caps award nominees.  Nice story on Jose Theodore.
