We’ll get things kicked off with an early game preview for tomorrow nights game against the Atlanta Thrashers. (Sporting News) In case you are sick of losing already, especially when it come to the Nats, and, if you are sick of being embarrassed in your own Stadium, likethe Nats, there are still two home games left, actually two games left, in the regular season for the Washington capitals. The difference. Caps win and no team control Verizon Center except the Sea of Red, period!
Make no mistake about it, the Capitals have won the Southeast Division, won the Eastern Conference, won the President’s Trophy, and secured the 1st seed int he eastern Conference playoffs, but this team still has things to play for. Take a look . . .
1. Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin is fighting to lead the NHL in goals scored and total points. It would be the second time he would lead the NHL in total points in the last three years and the third consecutive season he would lead the NHL in goals. If Alex finished atop both, it would be awfully hard to not give him the repeat Hart Trophy. Alex has a ton to play for.
2. Nicklas Backstrom. Backstrom has 31 goals and 67 assists. He has already made a career high in all three scoring categories, goals, assists, and points. Backstrom currently has 98 points. Two games, two points, and Backstrom gets his first 100 point season.
3. Alexander Semin. Semin has a career high in goals, scoring 39, eclipsing his 38 goal season of 2006/07. Semin has never recorded a 40 goal season. He is one goal away. Two games left, one goal needed.
4. Jose Theodore is 29-7-7. He is one win away from a 30 win season. If Theo can pull it off, he will record his 4th 30 win season of his career. Two games left, one win needed.
5. Playoff momentum. Period.
There are plenty of reasons for the Washington Capitals to play hard these last two games. Those listed above are pretty significant motivations individually. Let’s see how they play.
Nice article from the USA Today on the Caps preparation for the Stanley Cup run.
The Washington Capitals have the most points in the NHL. The team has the game’s most dynamic personality in Alex Ovechkin. The Caps have scored the most goals. They are among attendance leaders, essentially playing to capacity for the entire season. For the first time, the city of Washington has as much hockey clout as political power.
Here are your Award predictions from Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun. Burnside chooses Ovechkin for Hart.
How about the recognition for Jeff Schultz and his pretty damn good season. Fan Nation lists Schultz as a best defensemen finalist.
On the juggernaut Capitals, Schultz does not see any power play time and has just 41 shots on goals in 69 games this season. But as his league-leading plus-38 illustrates, he is one of the best pure defensemen around. His coach believes Schultz is also one of the most improved.
Actually, it is +44 now and he leads the NHL.
Finally, hope you weren’t getting use to Jay Beagle or Karl Alzner. Back to Hershey they go.
