John Kent Cooke speaks

John Kent Cooke, who spoke this week to Mike Wise of The Washington Post about his anguish over losing the Redskins to Dan Snyder in 1999 and his disgust with the current state of the franchise, was online at the Post today to talk further on those subjects. Here are edited highlights.

Here is John Cooke’s response to a question about Sonny Jurgensen saying that Jack Kent Cooke didn’t leave the Redskins to John because he didn’t think his son was capable of running it properly.

John Kent Cooke: Sonny was mistaken. My father could not leave the Redskins to me and the family for two reasons: he wanted the foundation to be significant and the size of his estate at that time was not as large as it was previously, and subject to estate taxes. When my father realized this he changed his will that had previously allowed him to pass the Redskins to my family and Elmendorf Racing Stables to my brother’s family.

On why he decided to speak out now:

I decided to speak now because the current organization has had 10 years to prove themselves and failed. The failure was compounded with the way they have treated the fans by suing them and taking advantage of them by overcommercializing everything in sight.

On Norv Turner and Richie Petitbon:

I believe Norv deserved a chance. He began to prove his ability in the 1999 season. By the way, I think Richie Petitbon deserved more time to prove himself. That was our mistake.

My note: I can’t believe he thinks Norv didn’t get a chance. He became head coach in 1994 and wasn’t fired until 13 games into the 2000 season. That’s a big chance — and he blew it.

Cooke’s favorite Redskins moment was John Riggins‘ 44 yard TD run on 4th and 1 in Super Bowl 17. Not a bad choice, Mr Cooke. Read it all.
