Smoke Signals: The heat is rising on Jim Zorn

Signs that Jim Zorn is doing a job too big for himself continue to appear. Jason Reid mentions one of those signs, from last Sunday’s game:

In the fourth quarter, Zorn attempted to signal for a timeout before a fourth-down play, prompting special teams coordinator Danny Smith to physically try to stop Zorn.

Zorn should have waited until just before the play clock reached zero in order to expend as much time as possible, which is why Smith appeared to be going crazy next to him. Zorn said his view of the 25-second play clock was obscured because of a pile of players.

This is embarrassing. A pile of players obscured Zorn’s view? Uh, then move a few feet to either side and get a better view? What, is he rooted to the ground? Sweet Jeebus, that’s a lame excuse. Zorn would be better off being honest and admitting he didn’t think to run the clock as much as possible before calling the timeout. That’s obviously what happened so why not just admit it? Now he looks like a liar AND a dope instead of just a dope.
Reid also includes this tidbit:
Several people have told me Snyder was prepared to fire Zorn if the Redskins had lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 16 at FedEx last season. They won.
There is other good stuff in there, including the stupidity of getting into a fight with Sonny Jurgensen and Reid calling out Clinton Portis for missing so much practice time. Read it.
Ex-Redskin Jon Jansen, whom the team will face this Sunday in Detroit, has some unresolved issues with former line coach Joe Bugel and the rest of team management. Read it. Or maybe he’s at peace with it all. Read it.
John Keim addresses three major questions the Redskins face, including how RT Stephon Heyer, who is struggling badly, will manage without RG Randy Thomas to bail him out. Read it.
DT Cornelius Griffin is rampaging around the field now that Albert Haynesworth has arrived to take all those double teams. It’s good for Griffin and the defense. Read it.
The Redskins have replaced Randy Thomas on the roster with…a tiny running back. That’s right, speedy Anthony Aldridge, one of Washington’s final roster cuts in the preseason, was signed off the Houston practice squad. Read it.
Veteran Skins columnist Paul Woody explains what’s wrong with the Redskins: They’re just not that good. Read it.

Russ Grimm deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Read it.
Portis on the radio addressing the team’s lack of big plays and other issues:
“We moved the ball well in both games, it’s just our red zone that we have to improve on. As far as moving the ball up and down the field, we do that. The thing that hurts us is our starting field position. We need 10- and 12-play drives to get a touchdown. We need to find a way to have a 1- or 2-play strike. We haven’t had many big plays. Until we develop that, teams are going to continue think we’ll self-explode — penalties, dropped pass, not convert on third down and kick a field goal. Until we get that right, it’s going to be hard to do anything. Our drives have been so long.”
Read it.

New Lions head coach Jim Schwartz is trying to change a losing culture in Detroit. Read it. Sure, but who is going to change the losing culture here in D.C.?

Idiot Robert Henson has taken down his Twitter account. What a shame. Read it.
