The Youth Report
is a weekly content article that evaluates the play and performance of
the Redskins rookies and sophomores, with trends of players going up,
down, or simply staying neutral, and a few little bits of
personal/opinion/comment. You may not always agree with our assessment of players,
so feel free to comment right here on the Blog or at theWarpath.net.
The Rookie Report
N CB Kevin Barnes : Barnes was among the inactive. The Redskins
3rd round pick has the potential to be an impact corner back, but that
potential is in development. What I would like to know is — can Barnes tackle? Does Barnes play less than 8 yards off a receiver? If so, put him in. If there is no faith yet, but he can tackle and does play up on the line, then have him teach it to Fred Smoot and DeAngelo Hall. They need it. Barnes is NEUTRAL.
LB Robert Henson ( ) No secret here, Henson deserves the down arrow because his actions on Twitter were stupid, moronic, and immature. We’ll get over it as fans though, most of us already have. Besides, whether he likes it or not, some of us appreciate those that make our Big Macs. Henson apologized, all is forgiven. The kid simply needs to learn to shut up and learn how to be a professional. Worst thing is, Henson was inactive. Kid don’t talk when you have done nothing to earn that right. Henson goes DOWN.
N DE Jeremy Jarmon: Jarmon got some reps and also committed a roughing the passer penalty early in the game on Rams QB Marc Bulger. Not going to lay into Jarmon too much on that because he is a rookie and will learn how close and how far you need to be to avoid those worthless, pathetic protection calls. Looking back at the play a few times, the call border lined bogus, but dont most of them? The NFL needs to change the rules because it is really looking like a sissy league when it comes to protecting quarterbacks. The fact that Jarmon is on the field speaks to the confidence he has gained in Greg Blache. Jarmon did not record any stats. We will continue to see Jarmon in pass rush situations as he continues to develop within the defense. Jarmon is NEUTRAL.
N WR Marko Mitchell: Is the NFL about production? Have the Redskins gotten much production from Malcolm Kelly or Devin Thomas? Kelly caught 4 passes last week, more than he caught all of last year. Maybe Kelly is starting to pick up. We’ll see. But where the hell is Devin Thomas? Fact is, the play calling has sucked, the red zone offense sucks, and the passing game has alot to be desired. Why not throw the tall Marko Mitchell in the mix? Toss it up in the corner of the end zone when they get tot he red zone. Isn’t that how a ton of teams utilize tall receivers. Wonder if Zorn ever though of that? You’ll likely have some mismatches size wise. Throw it to him anywhere for that matter. Will he really produce lower results than Thomas? Is that possible? We list Mitchell as NEUTRAL.

LB/DE Brian Orakpo: I thought Brian Orakpo stepped up and
played a nice, solid game. Orakpo also got some good pressure on Marc
Bulger, exactly what he was drafted to do. As we said last week,
Orakpo’s switch to a linebacking role is new for him and he will
continue to develop and progress each week as he leanrs his role, his
positoning, his abilities, and evnen more so, as het becomes more
accustomed to the level of play and speed of the NFL. He took further
steps this week and played a very nice game. Orakpo did not have a
recorded tackle, but was disruptive and like I mentioned earlier, he
got some nice pressure on Bulger. Orakpo goes UP.
STATS: Tckls: 0, Sacks: 0, FF: 0, FR: 0, Interceptions: 0 Pss Deflec: 1
N OL Edwin Williams: As
expected,
Williams was inactive. Get used to it. Then again, injuries are
starting. Then again, didn’t Clinton Portis forget his name? Isn’t
that a bad thing? Williams is NEUTRAL.
The
rookie report is complete. Good news, there are now DOWNs here. The
bad news, there are no UPs here. Just a neutral kind of thing.
The Sophomore Report
N RB Anthony Aldridge: Welcome back to Washington. Aldridge starts Neutral.
N TE Fred Davis:
So besides special teams, we had a Fred Davis sighting on offense. He
caught a pass! A huge catch for ummm, -2 yards. The baffling story of
the 2008 Redskins second round story saga continues. I think there are
several problems here. One, with the play calling the way it is, we
barely get the ball to Chris Cooley in the second half let alone
working in a second tight end. Second, why can’t we see some plays
taking advantage of having two receiving tight ends? Then again, is
Davis a receiving tight end? We don’t know, we haven’t seen it yet.
Eerily similar to Devi …. oh forget it!. Davis stays as Neutral.
STATS: Receptions: , Yards: -2, Avg: 0, TDs: 0

S Chris Horton:
Chris Horton easily was one of the best defenders on the field. He
earns an up arrow and praise here not because of the 4th quarter pass
breakup and 4th quarter forced fumble near the end of the game,
although that helps, but because Horton played a terrific game all
day. Horton was all over the place, involved in piles, and causing
more disruption. Seemed like last week we were talking about increased
playing time for S Reed Doughty, this week we are talking about the
reemergence of Chris Horton. Not a bad thing for Greg Blache. Horton
led the defense in tackles with 7 solos and 1 assist. He forced a
fumble and had 2 pass deflections. That to me is a good football
game.
Horton moves from Neutral to UP.

WR Malcolm Kelly: A Malcolm Kelly appearnce this past week.
Let’s hope this is the beginning of the real emergence of Kelly. Kelly
had 4 catches for 41 yards. Not great, but dammit, we’ll take it.
What Kelly needs to do is learn to get open more. Santana Moss is
still drawing the double teams, so Kelly is one on one coverage. Kelly
needs to get open and get separation. Then again, there are no deep
play calls in the Zorn offense, so just forget everything you just
read. Kelly gets upgraded to UP.
STATS: Receptions: 4, Yards: 41, Avg: 10.3, TDs: 0
N S Kareem Moore: Moore
pays chiefly on special teams. He doe sit well. I did nto see any
recorded tackles or stats from Moroe this week. Moore remains NEUTRAL.
STATS: Tackles: 1, Assts: 0, Pass Defl: 0, Sacks: 0, FF: 0, FR: 0, Intercep: 0

OG Chad Rinehart ( N )
Rhinehart has been inactive the first two weeks of the season. That is
about to change. Perhaps dramatically. OG Randy Thomas was placed on
the season ending injured reserve after tearing his tricep. The word
is, many in the organization want Rhinehart to take over, but the
latest is, Rhinehart will compete
with Will Montgomery, who took over for Thomas last Sunday. It is a
great opportunuity for the third round pick and for the franchise to
determine if the move toward youth on the offensive line will incldue
the 2007 third round pick. Because of the possible opportunity,
Rinehart is upgraded from neutral to UP.

WR Devin Thomas:
Again, who? IThomas had a few balls thrown at him, one dropped for a
TD. Thomas has yet to make hardly any impact whatsoever. IN fact, I
can honestly say at this point, let’s get a look at Marko Mitchell.
Thomas ennded week two with 0 catches. He had no catches week one.
That makes ZERO catches so far. Thomas did appear on kick returns, but
since then, Zorn recommitted that Rock Cartwright is the kick
returner. So then what role will Devin Thomas play? Probably the same
one he has been —- nothing. At this point, seeing what little we
have and seeing ZERO production, it is time to downgrade Thomas from
neutral to DOWN. There is no excuse for at least a little offensive
output. Even if the play calling is a mystery.
STATS: Receptions: 0, Yards: , Avg: 0, TDs: 0 — Rush: 1 Yds: 0
N CB Justin Tryon:
Tryon filled in the nickel slot for the injured Fred Smoot. He did
fine. It is not like St. Louis was an offensive threat. He didn’t
play 10 yards off like Smoot, so that was rather refreshing. Thing is,
he didnt get beat deep. That’s likely because he did nto get thrown on
deep. Tryon recorded 1 tackle. Tryon stays NEUTRAL.
STATS: Tackles: 1, Assts: 0, Pass Defl: 0, Sacks: 0, FF: 0, FR: 0, Intercep: 0

CB Byron Westbrook ( N )
Westbrook
plays on special teams mostly and performs well. He is becoming one of
the better special teamers and may have found a niche that will cause
him to stick on the roster. The week before he made a tackle and
almost made a great downed punt at the 2 yard line. This week he made
a sensational special teams tackle. He gets down the field and gets
free to make play. Best part is, he makes them. Kudos to Westbrook
who deserves the upgrade from neutral to UP.
STATS: Tackles: 2, Assts: 0, Pass Defl: 0, Sacks: 0, FF: 0, FR: 0, Intercep: 0
Youngster of the Week: S Chris Horton
