The Redskins Youth Report returns to DC Pro Sports Report for the 7th straight season.  If you are new to DCPSR, the Youth Report
is a weekly content article that evaluates the play and performance of
the Redskins rookies and sophomores, with trends of players going up,
down, or simply staying neutral
, and a few little bits of
personal/opinion/comment.  You may not always agree with our assessment of players,
so feel free to comment right here on the Blog or at theWarpath.net

The Rookie Report

CB Kevin Barnes ( N ) Oh, don’t look surprised.  Barnes was among the inactive.  The Redskins 3rd round pick has the potential to be an impact corner back, but that potential is in development.  He made some nice plays in preseason that reminded us why the Redskins selected the former Terp in the 3rd round, but he also looked like a fresh rookie, a lost one at that, at times.  He’ll grow, relax!  Even with his rookie mistakes and obvious inexperience, by placing him on inactive, are we really saying that he is not a better option than, ummm, Fred Smoot?  The other thing I noticed was that Wetbrook was active over our 3rd round pick.  Ok, let me rethink this paragraph for next week.  Barnes is NEUTRAL.

LB Robert Henson ( N Henson was placed on inactive list.  Kind of expected, but yet, not so much so.  I thought the Redskins would use Henson on special teams, one of those things that attracted them to the Linebacker in the draft.  Henson is NEUTRAL

DE Jeremy Jarmon ( N )
Jarmon was listed as active but I am not sure how much he got in the game because I never really noticed him, nor did he record a tackle.  Jarmon was involved in the play in which Andre Carter sacked Manning and forced a fumble.  His time will come though.  My bet is, Phillip Daniels at some point will have to miss time.  Come on, it happens every year.  Jarmon is NEUTRAL.

WR Marko Mitchell( NMitchell should stay trended upward simply because he was not inactive for the first week of the NFL season.  By the looks of the production from Santana Moss, Malcolm Kelly, and Devin Thomas, maybe not only should Mitchell be listed as active, but actually ACTIVE.
But that isn’t reality now is it?  We list Mitchell as NEUTRAL.

STATS:   Receptions:  0,  Yards:  0, Avg:  0,  TDs:  0

LB/DE Brian Orakpo ( N )
Orakpo started at strong side linebacker, just like the Redskins were
planning to do.  He did OK.  Orakpo is the type of player that he will
noticeably get better each week.  He did nothing impressive nor did he
do anything unimpressive.  Orakpo did not get to Eli Manning on third
down pass rush situations.  Orakpo recorded only 2 tackles.  When I
look at what the Redskins did with Orakpo [moving him to LB], and then
look at Phillip Daniels at END, i kind of ask myself —WHY?  Orakpo
was a stud defensive end at Texas.  Could he be here in DC?  I am just
not sold on the moving Orakpo to Linebacker.  Orakpo drops to NEUTRAL.

STATS: Tackles:  2, Sacks:  0, FFumb:  0, Fumb Reco:  0,  Interceptions:  0

OL Edwin Williams ( NAs
expected, Williams made the inactive list.  Get used to it.  Williams
is a luxury offensive line roster spot that may be eliminated if and
when the Redskins add a 3rd QB.  I suspect Williams will spend most, if
not all, of his weeks or season with the Redskins right here on the
inactives, barring injuries.  If not, our offensive line is probably
having major problems.   Williams is NEUTRAL

The
rookie report is complete.  Good news, there are now DOWNs here.  The
bad news, there are no UPs here.  Just a neutral kind of thing.

The Sophomore Report

TE Fred Davis( N )
Fred Davis had no recpetions.  Then again, minus Antwaan Randle El and
Chris Cooley, hardly anyone did.  Davis made a sweet block that sprung
P Hunter Smith for the Redskins first TD on the well-executed and
well-planned fake punt.  Smith could have thrown to Davis and Davis
would have scored, but once Davis realized Smith was not giving up that
TD, he sprung a great block for Smith.  Kudos to him.  Davis stays as Neutral

STATS:   Receptions:  0,  Yards:  0, Avg:  0,  TDs:  0

S Chris Horton ( N )
Chris Horton was the 7th round rookie sensation out of UCLA that had a
starting role thrust onto him with a season ending back injury to Reed
Doughty in training camp last year.  Horton was super impressive his
rookie year.  2009 is a different season, last year’s stats and
performance are short lived.  Horton needs to continue to show the
awesome presence he did last season, because Reed Doughty is healthy
and vying for playing time.  In fact, Doughty must have the confidence
of Redskins coaches because I noticed as the game got deeper into the
second half, Doughty was on the field more and more.  Horton did record
4 tackles and 5 assists.  The good thing is, Doughty and Horton will
push each other, which in theory, will make both players better.
Horton is NEUTRAL.

STATS: Tackles:  4, Assts:  5,  Pass Defl:  0,  Sacks:  0, FF:  0, FR:  0,  Intercep:  0

WR Malcolm Kelly ( NWho?
Oh, he played?  I would have never guessed.  Just like last season,
Kelly seemed AWOL.  I thought he missed the plane because his presence
on the field was certainly not recognizedThe two second round
draft picks were disappointing again, not what the Redskins offense
needs.  Kelly made one measley catch for an unimpressive 6 yards.  I
know you all like to blame Jason Campbell, and go ahead, because he
deserves some of it; however, there are several times, re-watching
parts of the game, that I noticed Campbell held on to the ball because
the receivers, Kelly being one, were simply NOT OPEN.  No separation.
The Redskins offense is boring enough, but if this is the way the
season is going to go, if Kelly and Thomas continue to board the Bust
Train, instead of stepping up, it is going to be a long year for the
Redskins offense and an awful boring one at that.  Enough of the talk.
Enough of the potential. Enough of the possibilities.  It’s time for
production.  Other rookies and sophomore receivers are producing.  It’s
time for one, if not both, to put the football where their mouth is,
because they both sucked on Sunday.  The only reason Kelly is not a
DOWN is because he was TREND UP last week, so we downgrade him to NEUTRAL.

STATS:   Receptions: 1,  Yards:  6,  Avg: 6.0,  TDs:  0

S Kareem Moore ( N ) I
like Kareem Moore and would not mind seeing him more on some defensive
sets, especially if Laron Landry is insistent on missing tackles and
committing penalties.  Moore plays well on special teams and plays
hard.  He gets down the field and is in the mix.  Moore recorded 1
tackle.  Moore stays NEUTRAL.

STATS: Tackles:  1,  Assts:  0,  Pass Defl:  0,  Sacks:  0, FF:  0, FR:  0,  Intercep:  0

OG Chad Rinehart ( N )
There were early reports that Rhinehart was challenging Randy Thomas
for the starting RG spot.  Those rumors quickly fizzled out.  Now,
Rhinehart, in his second season after being selected in the 3rd round,
is INACTIVE.  Not a good sign for Rhinehart — at all.  I am tempted
to make him TREND DOWN since he was inactive, something that is
concerning to me for a second year 3rd round pick, but I won’t unless
he is inactive next week too.  Rinehart stays (for now) as NEUTRAL

WR Devin Thomas ( N )
Again, who?  I will go a little easier on Thomas because he did not see
even half the time on the field that Kelly did.  He did make one rush,
of course it went for nothing, zilcho, zippo.  Not Thomas’ fault there
was no blocking.  I am just left more speechless than anything on the
lack of production from both these second round picks, too much of a
duplication of 2008.  I am just sick and tired of seeing rookies and
sophomore receivers elsewhere produce on the field, while ours just
talk of production.  I won’t downgrade Thomas yet, simply because he
did not play that much.  Thomas stays NEUTRAL

STATS:   Receptions: 0,  Yards:  ,  Avg: 0,  TDs:  0 — Rush:  1 Yds:  0

CB Justin Tryon ( N )
Fresh year for the 2008 4th round pick and his miserable rookie season
is no longer to be discussed here.  To be truthful, I really did not
take much notice to Tryon.  That tells me he really did not do much.
He had no recorded stats either.  Smoot was unfortunately the third
corner.  Tryon stays NEUTRAL.

STATS: Tackles:  0,  Assts:  0,  Pass Defl:  0,  Sacks:  0, FF:  0, FR:  0,  Intercep:  0

CB Byron Westbrook ( N )
Westbrook was in on special teams and just barely misssed downing a
punt inside the 2 yard line.  If Westbrook was just a bit taller, then
I would give him no excuse. Westbrook was also involved in 1 special
teams tackle.  Westbrook stays as NEUTRAL

STATS: Tackles:  0,  Assts:  0,  Pass Defl:  0,  Sacks:  0, FF:  0, FR:  0,  Intercep:  0
