Smoke Signals: Lavar Arrington rips the Redskins

Lavar Arrington says he doesn’t think the Redskins players looked in shape last Sunday, perhaps owing to a too-lenient training camp.
“Listen, they weren’t in shape,” he said. “I’m sorry, they just weren’t in shape . . . and when you have situations like that — to me, those are things that can change as time goes on — but some of those guys weren’t in the condition they needed to be to win that game.”
Naturally, the coaches don’t agree.

Jim Zorn says Redskins cornerbacks gave Giants wideouts too much of a cushion last Sunday.

Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray says the team will continue to play cornerbacks off opposing wide receivers, but that those cornerbacks must tackle better. Yeah, good luck getting Fred Smoot to tackle. I suppose anything is possible. Read it.
Jason Campbell took the blame for mistakes he made against the Giants, but thinks the fans are getting too down on the team too early. He’s right, of course, but it is in the nature of many fans to over-react to every win or loss. The problem wasn’t that the Redskins lost to the Giants on Sunday. The problem was that they lost while looking as if they hadn’t solved any problems from 2008 and as if they came out completely unprepared to play an NFL game.

Campbell also says that even if the TV cameras don’t show it, he’s a leader on the sidelines.

Even with the Giants missing a starting cornerback and their top nickel back, the Redskins passing game couldn’t exploit it. Being unable to get more than a field goal after DeAngelo Hall’s interception deep in Giants territory was particularly discouraging.

For all the talk of airing it out this season, only one of Campbell’s passes traveled more than 20 yards, the 57-yard incompletion to Santana Moss. Also, the Redskins debuted a 5-man defensive line on a number of plays last Sunday, with Brian Orakpo moving down to defensive end. And Albert Haynesworth was in for 72% of the defensive plays. That’s good.

This article correctly notes one of the things I’ve been writing about for years: Antwaan Randle El will be a productive wide receiver when he’s moved in to the slot, where he can take advantage of slower linebackers and inferior nickel cornerbacks. Randle El caught 7 passes for 98 yards
on Sunday.

Sure, the Redskins looked bad last Sunday, but at least they’re not the Chicago Bears, Carolina Panthers or Houston Texans.

The Redskins released WR
Onrea Jones from the practice squad and replaced him with OT
William Robinson. This means nothing to you.
