Your Washington Redskins are about to kick off the NFL season this weekend against the New York Giants. It’s a strange season so far in the fact there is a ton of debate out there on just how well and how good the Redskins are. Usually, I think for most part, at least speaking for myself, you can usually tell, you know, you have a gut instinct. This year — all bets are off. There are too many questions. Questions like —
1. Will the offensive line be better in pass protection
2. If they are, will they hold up, health wise?
3. Will Malcolm Kelly or Devin Thomas step up to an offensive boost in the passing game?
4. Will we see real QB pressure with the additions of Albert Haynesworth and Brian Orakpo?
5. Will the defense get more turnovers?
6. How much as this offense progressed in the Zorn system?
These are all HUGE underlying questions that make it substantially more difficult to get a grip on this years Redskins. But, regardless, this season is super huge for the tandem, QB Jason Campbell and HC Jim Zorn. Let’s face it. Monumental changes are the way if not. Campbell is in the last year of his deal, and Zorn faces an impatient owner with Mike Shanahan lurking in the background. Read it. The Washington Times agrees, the success of Campbell and Zorn are interlocked at this point. Read it.
Of course, winning has its price for Dan Snyder too. Read it.
Jason Reid writes that you shouldn’t expect surprise seventh rounder Marko Mitchell to leap frog over second year wide out Devin Thomas. Read it. QB Jason Campbell thinks Thomas can play and sent the signal to Thomas.
“I like Marko a lot, and Marko is going to help this team, but Devin
has a lot of ability,” quarterback Jason Campbell said. “It’s not that
Devin can’t play. He can definitely play. Devin just needs to
understand he has to be ready on every play.
The Washington Times has a nice piece on all you need and want to know about rookie first round pick Brian Orakpo. Read it.
A few people wondered how Devin Thomas and veteran Antawaan Randle El would handle Malcolm Kelly’s promotion to flanker spot opposite Santana Moss. Go find out. Read it. Kelly’s hard work and extra efforts paid off.
“I knew I was behind because I missed a whole lot more practices than
he did,” said Kelly, who was held out of minicamp and organized team
activities in May as he recovered from a third knee surgery. “I told
myself that behind or ahead I was going to stay after practice every
day, catch balls from Jason [Campbell], catch balls from the Jugs
machine, and it’s paying off.”“I think they believe that they can trust me to be in the right
spot and make plays,” Kelly said. “I try to make sure that my hands are
dependable. That’s one of my best attributes. I feel like I had a
pretty good training camp and then not to drop a ball the whole
preseason and to make plays… when they needed [them] showed them what
they needed to see.”
