Redskins finalize roster, provide a few surprises

AUTHOR: | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: None Yet |

The Washington Redskins settled on their 53 man roster.  Most is exactly what you would anticipate and expect.  However, there were a few surprises throw in the mix.

SURPRISES:

Offensive Line:  D’Anthony Batiste and undrafted rookie and former Terp Edwin Williams made the Redskins roster.  Williams is less than a surprise than Batiste.  Perhaps I am more surprised because veteran Jeremy Bridges was among the cuts.  Who would have honestly though, just two weeks ago, that Batisite would make this roster over bridges? Not I.  This was one that completely came under all radar.

Quarterback:  Redskins chose to go with 2 QBs, more than likely because of continued uncertainty with CB Carlos Rogers.  By taking just two QBs, the Redskins permitted themselves to keep CB Brian Westbrook, a 6th corner.  Rogers has missed all of preseason with a calf injury.   Colt Brennan was placed on the season ending injured reserve and will undergo surgery on his hip.   Surprise?  Not really.   The bigger surprise was the 3rd QB spot was not handed to Brennan’s competition, Chase Daniel.  Daniel was released and has hopes of clearing waivers and landing on the Redskins practice squad.

Defensive Line:  Although not a surprise to me, but apparently some out there, the Redskins chose to go with veteran presence and keep DE Renaldo Wynn while cutting 2008 7th rounder Rob Jackson.  Not a big surprise to me, at all.  DT Antonio Dixon will likely land on the practice squad.  Several in the Redskins organization liked and fought for Dixon.  In the end, Dixon’s problems became numbers.  There just wasn’t room.  A few fans circulated the idea of a possible waiver of DT Anthony Montgomery, but the Redskins front office should get a little more credit than that.  Monty, disgruntled or upset or not, has starting experience and has played well.  he provides excellent depth.

Linebacker:  Real shocker here.  Redskins cut veteran Robert Thomas.  I certainly never expected that.  They also waived 5th round pick Cody Glenn, although I think Glenn returns tot he practice squad.  Fellow draft pick Robert Henson beat out Glenn, which was expected by many.  Redskins provided too many hints of praise for Henson’s performance in the last game of preseason.  Darrell Young had his fans, fans among fans, fans in the Redskins brass.  I bet Young lands on the PS.

That’s all the surprises for me.  Once Shaun Suisham connected on the 48 yard field goal against Jacksonville, the kicking job was wrapped up and Suisham retained it.  That was a given.  RB Marcus Mason over Anthony Aldridge was another non-surprise.  While Aldridge fumbled a punt return that led to a Jacksonville TD, coaches seem to go out of their way post game in praising Mason’s blocking and special teams play.  That pretty much showed the hand there.

Overall, it is much as expected with just a few little surprises, but Redskins fans, you have your 53!
