Livan Hernandez put on a Nationals uniform for the first time since 2006, rejoining the Nationals to help eat starts and innings to save some younger arms. Hernandez pitched well. The bullpen did not.
The Nationals fell to Chicago 9-4. Livo pitched 6 solid innings allowing 2 runs and striking out 6. However, Jason Bergmann, Jorge Sosa and Ron Villone combined in relief 1.1 innings and allowed 7 runs to hand the Cubs the win. Offensively, Ryan Zimmerman and Willie Harris each had 2 hits as the Nats offense that put up 14 hits and 15 runs the previous day, generated 7 hits and 4 runs.
On the Farm …
Syracuse Chiefs (AAA): Syracuse defeated Scranton/WB 4-3 last night. Recently promoted Luis Atilano (2-0) pitched 5 innings allowing 7 hits and 3 runs to earn his 2nd AAA win. Jack Spradlin pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief and Logan Kensing picked up his 13th save. Ian Desmond continues to rip the ball and make a case for a Nationals call up. Desmond went 3-4, doubling, and scoring twice. He is hitting .346 at AAA. Jhonatan Solano went 2-3 and drove in 2 runs.
Harrisburg Senators (AA): The Senators defeated New Hamphshire 3-2 behind a solid 4.1 innings performance by Justin Jones. Jones allowed 5 hits and struck out 5. Adrian Alaniz earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing a run and striking out 8. Atahaulpha Severino picked up his 2nd AA save and 15th overall. Jemel Spearman was 2-3 and Michael Daniel hit his 7th homer for the Senators.
Potomac Nationals (A): Potomac held off Myrtle Beach for a 4-3 win. 2008 draftee Bill Atwood (8-7) pitched 7.1 strong innings allowing 2 runs and striking out 6 to earn his 8th win. Cole Kimball pitched the 9th allowing a run but picking up his 8th save. Kimball is struggling, recording an ERA of 6.81. Danny Espinosa (15) and Brian Peacock (5) homered for the Nationals. Espinosa drove in 2 runs and scored 2. He is hitting .323 over his last 10 games.
Hagerstown Suns (A): The Suns fell to Lakewood 3-1. Marcus Frias continues to pitch exceptionally well for the Suns, going 6.1 innings, allowing 1 run and striking out 5 On the season, Frias is 8-4 with a 2.96 ERA and has recorded 104 strikeouts in 115 innings. Patrick Arnold (3-5) took the loss out of the bullpen. The Suns offense managed only 5 hits.
Vermont Lake Monsters (A): Vermont defeated Brooklyn 7-6 . 2009 draft pick Clayton Dill blew the save for the Lake Monsters but picked up the win, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings. Recently promoted Dean Weaver picked up the save, his first. Francisco Soriano was 2-6 hitting his 1st homer and driving in 2 runs. He is hitting .296 on the season. Johnathan Ramirez had a big night going 4-6 hit 2 homers, scoring 3 runs and driving in 3 more. Justin Bloxom and Sandy Leon each had 3 hits in the 16 hit Lake Monster assault.
Gulf Coast Nationals (Rookie): The GCL Nationals 13 game winning streak was snapped, getting pounded by the Marlins 11-1.
