Time to give an update on the performance of the 2009 draft class. Here is how they are doing up to today. We put 3 stars * * * after the ones to keep an eye on because of impressive performances. They are DCPSR stars of the 2009 Draft Class thus far. 2 Stars * * after ones that are doing fairly well and showing promise. For ones that are ranked, we add a D for DOWNGRADE and I for IMPROVEMENT The rest either have not played enough, have not played at all. are struggling a bit, or are just pretty much average.
1st Rd, 10th pick: P Drew Storen.
Storen was drafted to be the future closer. He has climbed the system quickly and impressively. He has now made 6 appearances at AA and has 6 saves in 8 scoreless innings. Overall, Storen is 1-1 with 8 saves. He has pitched in 32.1 total innings, allowed 8 earned runs for an ERA of 2.20. He has recorded 43 strikeouts with 7 walks. At this point, I don’t think there is anyway the Nationals could be more pleased. Storen is the real deal. * * *
2nd Round: 2B Jeff Kobernus. Kobernus was assigned to Vermont. In 10 games, Kobernus has 41 at bats and is hitting .220 with 4 stolen bases. No further update.
3rd Round: P Trevor Holder.
Holder was assigned to Vermont, promoted to Hagerstown, and recently promoted to Potomac. In a total of 10 starts,
Holder is 4-2 record with a 6.32 ERA. He has recorded 30
strikeouts in 37 innings. Holder is getting shelled at Potomac in advanced A ball. He is Holder is 2-2 with a 8.53 ERA
allowing 18 runs in 19 innings.
4th Round: P Anthony Morris.
Morris was initially assigned to the GCL Nationals rookie league and
has been promoted to Hagerstown. Morris has started 7
games and is 0-2 with a 3.10 ERA. He has recorded 23 strikeouts in 24
innings. He has limited walks to just 5. * *
5th Round: P Miguel Pena. Unsigned according to the Nationals website.
6th Round: SS Michael Taylor. Assigned to the GCL Nationals and has not played.
7th Round: P Andrew Weaver.
Weaver was assigned to the GCL Nationals and recently promoted to Vermont. In 6 bullpen appearances, Waever has posted a 3.10 ERA. He has struck out 8 batters in 8.2 innings.
8th Round: SS Roberto Perez. Signed on 8/14. Assigned to GCL Nationals. In 14 at bats, Perez has 4 hits and 3 RBs.
9th Round: P Taylor Jordan.
Jordan was assigned to the GCL Nationals. He has made 9 appearances
including 4 starts. Jordoan gained his first two wins and is 2-0 with a 3.34 ERA. In 29.2 innings he has recorded 29
strikeouts and 9 walks. * *
10th Round: P Paul Applebee.
Applebee was assigned to GCL Nationals and recently promoted to Vermont. Overall, he has appeared in 5 games with 4 starts. He is 0-1 with a 3.43 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 21 innings. * *
11th Round: OF Justin Bloxom. Bloxom was assigned to Vermont
and has played in 55 games. In 181 at bats, Bloxom is hitting .215. He ha s3 doubles, 3 homers and 17 RBIs for the Lake Monsters.
12th Round: P Nathan Karns. Signed on 8/17/09. Not played yet.
13th Round: P Patrick Lehman.
Lehman was assigned to Vermont and promoted to Hagerstown. Lehman went
3-1 with a 1.65 ERA earning a promotion to Hagerstown. Overall,
Lehman has pitched in 11 games and made 7 starts. He is 3-2 with a 1.90
ERA and has allowed 10 earned runs in 47.1 innings. * * *
14th Round: OF Naoya Washiya.
Assigned to the GCL Nationals, Washiya has played in 34 games with 101 at bats. He is hitting .238 and has 3 doubles, 11 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
15th Round: Corey Davis. According to Nats website, Davis is unsigned.
16th Round: SS Sean Nicol.
Nicol was assigned to Vermont. Nicol has played in 51 games has 182 at
bats and is hitting .269. Nicol has added 7 doubles, 17 RBIs, and 7
steals.
17th Round: P Chad Jenkins.
Jenkins was assigned to GCL Nationals and promoted to
Vermont. Jenkins has appeared in 10 games with 8 starts. He has an 0-2 record with an ERA of 5.18. In 33 total innings, he has recorded 30
strikeouts, but has walked 21 batters.
18th Round: SS Marcus Stroman. According to Nationals website, Stroman is unsigned.
19th Round: P Frank Corolla. Corolla has been assigned to Vermont but has not pitched yet.
20th Round: 3B Jack Walker.
Walker has been assigned to Vermont. He has played in 40 games and has
114 at bats and is hitting .228. Walker has 7 doubles, 1 homer, and
has knocked in 16 runs.
21st Round: P Mitchell Clegg.
Clegg was assigned to Vermont. Clegg has appeared in 11 games and made 9 starts. Clegg is 1-4 with a 2.47 ERA. In 47.1
innings, he has 23 strikeouts agaisnt 10 walks. * *
22nd Round: P Daniel Rosenbaum:
Rosenbaum was assigned to GCL Nationals. Rosenbaum has been
impressive. He has appeared in 10 games, 7 of which were starts. He is 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA. In 32 innings, he has struck out 32 while
allowing only 7 walks. His last start, Rosenbaum threw 5 innings allowing 1 run and striking out 7. Look for a call up soon to Vermont or Hagerstown soon. * * *
23rd Round: SS Kyle Breault. Was assigned to GCL Nationals. Has only played in 1 game and went 0-3.
24th Round: P Dustin Crane.
Was assigned to GCL Nationals and promoted to Vermont. Crane has been
in 16 bullpen appearances and is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA. In 26.2 innings, Crane has struck out 24 batters and allowed 7 walks. Since
his promotion to Vermont, he has pitched in 6 games and posted a 1.38 ERA. * *
25th Round: P Matt Ridings. According to Nationals website, Ridings is unsigned.
26th Round: SS Dianison Boekhoudt. Assigned to the GCL and has not played.
27th Round: P Brandon King.
King was assigned to GCL Nationals. He has appeared in 7 games and made 5 starts. King is 3-0 with a 4.17 ERA. He has pitched in 26.1 innings and struck out 27. In his last game,
King tossed 5 innings allowing 1 run and striking out 4. King is heating up and in his last 2 starts has allowed 1 run in 10 innings, striking out 10. * *
28th Round: P Matt Swynenburg.
Assigned to GCL Nationals and promoted to Vermont. Overall, he has
pitched in 9 games, making 7 starts. He is 1-3 with a 4.59 ERA. He
has tossed 33.1 innings he has recorded 26 strikouts but has given up 18 walks. His last start, he threw 5 shutout innings allowing 1 hit, 3 walks, and struckout 2 to earn the win.
29th Round: P Evan Bronson.
Bronson was assigned to Vermont. He has been the most impressive of
the draft class thus far. In 17 games out of the bullpen, Bronson is
2-0 with an ERA of just 0.64. He has pitched in 42.1 innings and allowed
just 3 runs. He has struck out 31 and only allowed 2 walks. Do i hear
Hagerstown or Potomac calling? * * *
30th Round: P Rob Wort.
Was assigned to GCL Nationals. Has pitched 16 games out of the
bullpen. He is 3-2 with a 3.66 ERA. In 19.2 innings, he has allowed 8
runs, struck out 15 and allowed 10 walks.
32nd Round: P Kyle Morrisonn. Was assigned to Vermont. He has
pitched in 11 games including 6 starts. He is 2-2 with a 3.43 ERA. In 39.1 innings, he has allowed 15 runs, 18 walks and struck out 32.
34th Round: P Shane McCatty. Has been assigned to GCL
Nationals. McCatty is the son of the Washington Nationals pitching
coach Steve McCatty. Shane has pitched in 12 games, made 1 start. He
is 1-1 with an ERA of 4.44. In 24.1 innings, he has walked 5 and struck
out 15.
That gives us a total of 4 * * * and 6 * * as we rank them.
