Haywood apologizes

Wizards center Brendan Haywood is apologizing for what he wrote about guard/lunatic Stephon Marbury earlier this month. If you don’t know, Marbury has taken to videotaping virtually all aspects of his life and broadcasting them on the Internet. The result, as Haywood noted, is to make a reasonable observer wonder if Marbury has taken and passed a drug test recently. Here is what a portion of what Haywood wrote about it:

What the HELL is wrong with Stephon Marbury?!!! Over the past week, he’s released some of the strangest and most disturbing videos I’ve ever seen (from his 24 hours of Marbury TV Marathon). In one clip he cries uncontrollably for 5 straight minutes with no shirt on while his homeboy rubs his shoulders – why, I don’t know?! In another clip, he eats Vaseline, claiming his throat is sore and that this would solve the problem. Not to be outdone, he has another clip where he dances to a song called “Barbie Doll!” That was very disturbing. If I was on his team, there’s no way I’m getting undressed in front of him after watching that…

Okay, so you get it. Haywood certainly appears to be suggesting that Marbury is or might be a  homosexual. Here is what Haywood recently wrote about the reaction to his earlier blogging:

I just wanted to take a time out and let you know that no disrespect was intended. I was just trying to have fun with a crazy situation. I don’t support or condemn homosexuality and I believe in everyone making choices for themselves. If it doesn’t affect me, I don’t really care. I hope no one was offended because I wasn’t trying to come off like Tim Hardaway.

My view of most pro athletes in the U.S. is that they are homophobes. They don’t like homosexuals or homosexuality and if they don’t necessarily think homosexuality is a sin, they think it is weird and disgusting. That mind-set, if they didn’t pick it up at home first, is drummed into them by coaches and teammates for years — don’t be a sissy, don’t be a fag, be a man and take the pain and fight through the…yada yada yada. You know how it goes.
That, I suspect, is what motivated Haywood. The fact is, Marbury’s actions on the video are weird for a variety of reasons and there have been moments where some small portions of it could be interpreted as semi-homo-erotic. But not really. Not much. Taking an incident or two out of a person’s life and trying to extrapolate it out into a sexual orientation isn’t a very clever thing to do or accurate way of determining if someone is homosexual or not.
Basically, I think Haywood — whom I like and think of as unusually intelligent for a pro athlete — wrote something about Marbury off the top of his head because what Marbury was doing seemed weird and unusual. I’m glad Haywood has at least tried to clear it up.
