Smoke Signals: Tom Coughlin is a weird dude

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for smoke signals.jpgThe Redskins begin the 2009 preseason tomorrow at Baltimore against the Ravens, a team that went from 5-11 to 11-5 and a loss in the AFC Championship game last year with a rookie at quarterback. Here is a preview of the game.

It’s probably a good thing Haynesworth didn’t go to the Giants, where Head Coach Tom Coughlin and Haynesworth would have had a rocky relationship, if their pre-draft phone conversation back in 2002 is any guide.

“I spent three or four hours on the phone with him the day before the draft,” Haynesworth said. “He kept asking me these questions that didn’t quite make sense to me. He’s like, ‘OK, if I ask you to do something and you know it’s the wrong thing to do, what are you going to do?’ So I’m like, ‘Well, I’ll do the right thing.’ And he said, ‘No, do what I say.’ We kind of clashed at the time. I said, ‘Yeah, I don’t need to go to Jacksonville.’ “

Coughlin is a terrific football coach, but he’s also a very weird dude. Probably has few friends. Read it.
DT Albert Haynesworth will not play in the preseason opener. Read it. The same goes for TB Clinton Portis, who hates any kind of work during the month of August. Also, don’t expect to see RG Randy Thomas on the field either, as he’s still battling knee troubles. Read it. And WR Santana Moss probably won’t see much of the field on Thursday night either. Read it. On the other hand, you should see plenty of WRs Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, as well as OT Mike Williams. Read it.
Defensive Coordinator Greg Blache, like everyone else, thinks the 2009 defense should be good.

“Yeah, we have the chance to be better. We have the potential to be better, but we’ve still got to go out and do it,” he said. “So far, we haven’t played anybody yet. All of it’s still just speculation.

“You go back and look at draft picks over the years, and the speculation behind it, there’s a lot of them that didn’t live up [to the advance billing] and pan out. I don’t think that’s the scenario here, but you’ve got to wait and let ‘em play.”

Read it.
Despite the addition of rookies Brian Orakpo and Jeremy Jarmon, Blache is counting on his veterans to lead the defense. Read it.
Instead of spending his summer studying photography in Paris, Redskins 3rd round pick in the 2009 supplemental draft Jeremy Jarmon is learning how to play defensive end in the NFL. It’s not quite what he had planned. Read it.
Redskins OL Coach Joe Bugel loves football violence. Big surprise. Read it.
Larry Weisman compares Jason Campbell to Michael Vick, both quarterbacks looking to prove themselves this year. Read it.
The Redskins will not be signing Michael Vick, okay? Just deal with it. Read it.
John Keim looks at the WR position on the Redskins. Read it.
QB Todd Collins talks about his 2nd year in the Jim Zorn offense and Redskins safeties are playing well in training camp. Read it.
Stephon Heyer, Edwin Williams, Scott Burley: The Redskins have Terp linemen in camp. Read it.
These 4 upcoming preseason games are like the Super Bowl to QB Colt Brennan. Read it.
CB Justin Tryon is playing better this training camp. Read it.
