Nats Farm Report (AUG 12) — Storen picks up first AA save

Syracuse Chiefs (AAA) split a double header.  The Chiefs scored a 5-0 shutout in Game 1 behind the arm of Andre Kown.  Kown pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits. Kown is a guy to keep an eye on, putting up super impressive numbers this season.  Overall, Kown is 8-1 with a 3.07 ERA, pitching in 82 innings between AA and AAA. 

Justin Maxwell remains hot at the plate going 2 for 3 with a run scored.  Over the last 10 games, Maxwell has hit .429 with a double, 2 triples, and a homer.  Kory Casto was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs.  Peter Orr hit his 7th homer. 

The Chiefs fell in Game 2 by a score of  3-1. Hector Ramirez provided the Chiefs with a quality start, throwing 5 innings and allowing 1 run.  Zach Segovia took the loss out of the pen allowing 2 runs.  Peter Orr was 2 for 3 and newly acquired Norris Hopper, acquired via trade from Colorado, had 2 hits.  Hopper is hitting .412 since joining the Chiefs on August 7th. 

Harrisburg Senators (AA) defeated Binghamton 504 last night.  Aaron Thompson, acquired in the Nick Johnson trade, threw 5.2 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 runs.  Corey Van Allen picked up the win out of the bullpen and 2009 first round pick Drew Storen, promoted yesterday to AA and on a fast track to DC, pitched the 9th to pick up his first AA save in his first AA game, throwing a scoreless 9th inning.  Leonard Davis, Joel Guzman, and Matt Whitney each had 2 hits. 

Potomac Nationals (A) defeated Frederick 4-3.  Bill Atwood threw just 3 innings, getting hammered for 3 runs and 6 hits.  The Nationals bullpen then threw 6 scoreless innings, allowing just 1 hit to preserve the Nats win.  Chris Marrero was 1 for 4 with a run.  Brad Peacock had 2 RBIs.  Keep an eye on Nats bullpen reliever Dan Leatherman.  Leatherman picked up his 4th save last nigth.  Overall, Leatherman is 5-1 with 4 saves and an ERA of 3.12.  In 57.2 innings, he has recorded 52 strikeouts.

Hagerstown Suns (A) were rained out. 

Vermont Lake Monsters (A) got hammered 10-3 last night.  2008 top round pick Jack McGeary took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits.  John Higley was 2-4 with 2 runs and a triple.

Gulf Coast Nationals (Rookie) won 3-1 yesterday behind 2008 top round P Joshua Smoker.  Smoker threw 6 strong innings, scattering 4 hits and gave up 0 runs.  Rob Wort, a 2009 draftee, picked up the save, throwing 2 scoreless innings.  Eury Perez, one of the hottest batting prospects in the system, went 3-3 and is now hitting .352.
