Big Redskins news: Insiders expect Devin Thomas to win starting job

Football news this time of year can be rather silly, as news outlets vie with each other to find the latest story [or non-story] coming out of each of the 32 NFL training camps. But this is an actual nugget of interesting information about WR Devin Thomas from Jason Reid:

while speaking to people I trust in the organization last night, three separate sources praised Thomas for his improved approach. They told me he has been attentive in his position group meetings, works hard in drills and knows the playbook, three things that could not be said about him as a rookie last season.

Barring injury or regression, they said, expect Thomas to be the starting Z receiver, or flanker, opposite top wideout Santana Moss, the X receiver, or split end. They said it is clear that’s the direction the coaching staff would prefer to go, which would enable the Skins to move last year’s No. 2 receiver, Antwaan Randle El, to a full-time slot receiver role.

Okay, that’s not a huge scoop, of course. Everyone who follows the team knows that Head Coach Jim Zorn, WR Coach Stan Hixon and the rest of the offensive brain trust wants Devin Thomas to take a starting role this year, particularly after his rookie year [and that of fellow rookie WR Malcolm Kelly] was so disappointing. Devin Thomas winning a starting job [and then justifying it during the regular season] would transform the offense from a conservative passing “attack” focused on just two players — Moss and TE Chris Cooley — into a more interesting and dangerous attack featuring two deep threats, Moss and Thomas.
It would also take a lot of heat off the Redskins front office, which has justifiably caught a lot of it for its bone-headed decisions the last, oh, 10 years.
