Fabricio Oberto update

by Uncategorized

Earlier today we reported that the Washington Wizards have offered a contract to free agent center Fabricio Oberto. It appears that the Wizards have only expressed interest and perhaps suggested some numbers. Oberto’s agent says “nothing’s imminent” and that his client is considering about 6 different teams, including the Wizards.

In addition to Oberto, the Wizards are also looking at Chris Wilcox, Jason Collins, Jamaal Magloire, Sean Marks, Mikki Moore and Brian Skinner.
Chris Wilcox would be the most popular, due to his winning a national championship during his two years at the University of Maryland. However, Wilcox can’t play much, if at all, center and he’s a poor defender. He can block shots and is a fantastic finisher, but I’m not sure he has the size and bulk the team wants. I’m also not at all sure he’d take the modest money Washington is talking about.
Mikki Moore is about 7 feet tall, but he’s skinny and gets pushed around a bit. He had one really good year in 2006-07 and hasn’t done much since then. I can’t imagine he’s anything other than a fallback position for the Wizards. Skinner is 33 years old and only 6’9″ but he’s played a lot of center due to his considerable bulk — he’s about 255 pounds. He rebounds fairly well, but he’s not much of a shooter. Jason Collins has the size [7 feet tall and almost 260 pounds], but he’s…uh, terrible. I mean, really. He’s terrible. Sean Marks is a cheap, 33-year-old New Zealander who almost never plays. Jamal Magloire is big as hell, but he’s one of the slowest players I’ve ever seen in the NBA. He can bang in the paint, but his utter lack of speed allows quicker big men to take advantage of him. He’s been going downhill for years.
