Dumb jock invents 'smart football'

Okay, maybe the title is a bit too harsh. Chris Cooley, All Pro tight end for the Washington Redskins might not be a dumb jock — no matter how much he acts like one. Stepping in for Peter King at Sports Illustrated, Cooley writes about what he and non-athlete Shaun Suisham, [soon-to-be-cut place-kicker for the Washington Redskins talk about during down time at practice. Among those things is ‘smart football,’ which Cooley thinks will solve a lot of judgment call problems with NFL officiating.
In a nutshell, the idea is to put tiny sensors inside each football and use GPS tracking to figure out if and when the ball crosses the end zone line, the out of of bounds line or the first down marker. Actually, not a bad idea at all, if such a thing could be done technically. Footballs can take a real beating during games and I wonder if it would be possible to design a sensor small enough to fit inside a football and not change the shape or weight of it, but still tough enough to withstand the punishment of an NFL game. If it can be done technically, I think Cooley is on to something.
Cooley then goes on to write the 10 things he thinks he thinks:
I think the Washington Redskins are going to have an outstanding season and win a ton of games. We’ve done everything a team can do in the offseason to get better. Jason Campbell is so close to being one of the best QB’s in the league; he will have a great year. Note: I have to say all this regardless, but it’s nice to actually believe it.
I hope he’s right about that. I’ve been a Jason Campbell supporter from the beginning and I hope my faith in him is closer to the truth than the front office’s repeatedly demonstrated lack of faith.
Cooley writes more about how good the tight end position is in the NFC now, how Hawaii should be the permanent home for the Pro Bowl, how 2 more regular season games would be fine provided the NFL loses 2 preseason games and adjusts salaries accordingly. There’s other stuff, too. Go read it. A pretty good job by Cooley.
