What??? The Nationals have won 3 in a row.
No. This is not April. It is not the first of the month.
The Washington Nationals indeed have won their third straight, defeating the Toronto Blue Jays in 11 innings on a bases loaded single by Adam Dunn. Stunning.
The nationals already stunned many by taking 2 out of 3 from the New York Yankees, in new York. Not they have done it again. Is this team fighting for Manny Acta?
Thats not it though. We have more stunning news. Ready?
The Nationals did it with outstanding work from, ummmm, the bullpen. Kip Wells, Julian Tavarez, Ron Villone, Joel Hanrahan, Joe Beimel, and Jesus Colome combined for 5.1 innings of shutout relief after a second straight nice performance on the start by Jordan Zimmerman to lead the Nats to the win.
Zimmerman pitched 5.2 innings allowing just 1 run on 5 hits and 3 strikeouts. In his last 2 starts, Zimmerman has pitched 10.2 innings and allowed just 2 runs.
Want to know the difference. Simple. The Nationals are getting good efforts on the mound, something that has been a rarity this season. Yesterday, against the Yankees, Craig Stammen pitched 6.1 shutout innings and two days ago John Lannan went 8.1 innings allowing 2 runs. Today, Zim went 5.2 allowing just one run. That equals 3 wins. There you have it.
Christian Guzman, Nick Johnson, and Adam Dunn each had multi-hit games for the Nats. Jordan Zimmerman knocked in the first run on a bases loaded fielders choice, Dunn nails the game winner on a bases loaded single in the 11th.
I ask again — is this team fighting for Manny Acta? Or is the ptiching maturing? Or is this an aberration?
