NBA odds and ends: Be like Mike edition
AUTHOR: dcprosportsreport | IN: Uncategorized | COMMENTS: |
NBA Commissioner David Stern isn’t happy. Not only did the league’s pre-ordained Finals matchup of Lebron and the Traveliers v. Kobe and the Lake Show fail to get done, Lebron, the reigning MVP and face of the league, went and made things worse by stiffing the Orlando Magic on their handshakes and the media on their post-game press conference. The league will not fine James, of course [that might make him angry], but Stern did allow how he is not happy. Whoa.
Lebron has had a
benign growth removed from his mouth. Maybe that was where he was keeping his words of good sportsmanship.
Mickael Pietrus, the Orlando swing-man who guarded Lebron James and helped bury the Cavs with his 3-point shooting, is ditching the Kobe Bryant shoes he’s been wearing. For the Finals, when he’ll often be guarding Bryant, Pietrus is going old school — Michael Jordan shoes. Not a bad choice. Mickael will be like Mike.
Meanwhile, read this Bill Simmons opus on the problem with the NBA right now. You can sum it up in two words:
bad officiating. It’s hard to argue with what Simmons writes in here and every NBA fan should read it. This business of bailing out superstars like
Lebron James, who barrel recklessly into the paint knowing the zebras will blow a whistle almost no matter what, has got to stop. It’s ruining the game by slowing it down and making fans cynical about the outcomes of important league matchups. It’s nice to see Simmons, who has been coasting for years now, write a good column. I hope he does it more often.
Finally,
President Obama picks the Lakers to win the Finals in 6 games. He got the NCAA tournament correct, so attention should be paid.
